FORCED PROXIMITY

Chapter 3: Forced Proximity Two days later, Kai found himself sitting across from Aiden in the glass walled meeting room, the city lights flickering against the windows like distant stars. The tension was tangible, like static electricity in the air, and Kai could feel it humming through his own body. “You’ll need to adjust these sketches,” Aiden said, tapping one with a manicured finger. “I want something bold, something that screams our brand. Not… whatever this is.” Kai’s brow furrowed. “I thought this was exactly what you asked for?” “You thought wrong,” Aiden said smoothly, eyes narrowing. “I never said I liked what you did. I said I wanted results.” Kai exhaled sharply, leaning back in his chair. He tried to mask the heat creeping into his cheeks, but he doubted he was succeeding. “You’re impossible.” Aiden’s smirk tugged at the corner of his lips, that same infuriating, cocky smirk that made Kai want to roll his eyes and also, inexplicably, tugged at his chest. “And you, apparently, are stubborn. This is going to be fun.” Kai clenched his fists, gripping the edge of the table. He wanted to stand up, to leave, to shove the sketches in Aiden’s face and walk out. But something about the way Aiden leaned slightly forward, the intensity in his steel-grey eyes, kept him rooted in place. “You realize,” Kai said carefully, trying to regain control, “that your idea of ‘fun’ usually involves ruining someone else’s life?” Aiden’s eyebrow quirked, amused. “Ruining? I call it… refining. Challenging. Pushing boundaries. You’d understand if you weren’t so busy hiding behind your pencil.” Kai bristled. “I’m not hiding. I just… think before I act. Something you clearly don’t do.” The words hung in the air, sharp, and for a moment, neither moved. Aiden’s gaze softened not in a completely obvious way, but enough that Kai felt his heart flutter against his ribs. “You know,” Aiden said slowly, “you frustrate me more than anyone else I’ve ever met. And yet…” He paused, leaning closer, too close for Kai’s comfort. “I can’t seem to stay away.” Kai’s breath hitched. He felt trapped between irritation, disbelief, and something entirely unfamiliar: curiosity. And an unshakable pull toward the man who was apparently determined to dismantle every layer of his carefully guarded composure. “Careful,” Kai muttered, barely audible, “I might start thinking you’re serious.” “Am I?” Aiden countered, the smirk now gone, replaced with something almost… daring. His eyes held Kai’s, unblinking, as though searching for cracks in the armor Kai didn’t want to show. Kai looked down at the sketches, pretending to focus, but his hand trembled slightly. He could feel Aiden’s presence pressing against him not in a threatening way, but suffocatingly close, like gravity he couldn’t escape. Finally, Aiden leaned back, smirk returning but softened, teasing in a way that made Kai grit his teeth. “We’ll see who cracks first,” he said, voice low and confident. Kai exhaled, closing his eyes briefly. I can’t let him get to me, he thought. Not now. Not ever. But deep down, he knew it wasn’t just the sketches he was worried about. Something about Aiden Cross sharp, infuriating, impossible Aiden was already getting to him. And somehow, Kai didn’t hate it.
