CHAPTER SIX: THE MASK BEHIND THE MONSTER The scorching sun beat down on the deserted school grounds, casting long shadows across the empty classrooms. The once-familiar halls now seemed ominous, the silence punctuated only by the distant screams of terrified students. Jane's heart pounded in her chest as she ran, her feet pounding the pavement. She had to find a way out, had to escape the clutches of the monster that lurked in the shadows. Her group members scattered, each one desperate to find a way to safety. But as they ran, they realized that the entrance gate was locked, trapping them inside. Panic set in, and the screams grew louder. Lexi, a petite girl with curly brown hair, hid under a table in one of the classrooms. She covered her mouth, trying to stifle her ragged breathing. The figure entered the classroom, its footsteps echoing off the walls. Lexi's eyes were fixed on the figure, her heart racing with fear. As the figure walked around the classroom, Lexi's eyes followed its every move. She held her breath, praying that she wouldn't be discovered. But as the figure turned to leave, its eyes landed on the back door of the classroom. Lexi's heart sank, and she knew she had to get out of there. She exhaled deeply, her breath shaking as she lifted herself up from the table. But as she turned to leave, a sharp, blunt axe plunged directly into her chest. Lexi's eyes widened in shock, and she let out a piercing scream before dropping dead on the floor. The rest of the students heard the scream and became even more terrified. "What are we going to do now?" Beauty asked, her voice trembling with fear. "I really don't know, let's try another way out," Jane said, pointing at the school's second gate. Her voice was firm, but her eyes betrayed her fear. "He's coming!" Mike, a student, yelled, and they began running fiercely in different directions. Jane wondered where the other groups were and went to hide behind a car. As she waited, her heart pounding in her chest, she heard screams in the distance. She remained frozen, her eyes fixed on the car in front of her. Suddenly, she saw an iron pipe lying on the ground and grabbed it with both hands, ready to defend herself. The figure soon walked towards her direction, its footsteps echoing off the walls. Jane held her breath, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. As the figure came closer, Jane saw her chance and hit the figure with the iron pipe, using all her strength. The figure dropped the axe it held and staggered backwards. Jane saw another opportunity and hit the figure hard again until it fell down flat on the ground. As the figure lay motionless, Jane ran to search for the others. After what felt like an eternity, she found some of them hiding in different directions. She called out to them, checking if they were okay. They all came out fearfully, their eyes wide with terror. Jane noticed that about six of them were missing. She asked if anyone had seen Beauty, but they all shook their heads. Just then, Rose, a quiet girl from Class B, saw the figure coming and instead of alerting the others, she slowly moved away from the group. Cherish saw her and called out, "Hey!" But Rose pretended not to hear. "Who was that?" Jane asked, her eyes narrowing. "It was..." Before Cherish could complete her words, a short, sharp knife plunged right into her skull. The group was shocked as she dropped dead on the floor, blood flowing from her head. The students looked back and saw the figure coming towards them with speed. They screamed loudly and started running again in different directions. Jane took a stone and threw it at the figure, who dodged it easily. She kept running until she saw a tree and hid behind it. She waited, her heart pounding in her chest, until the figure came close. With a surge of adrenaline, Jane hit the figure with an iron rod multiple times. The figure fell down, and Jane kept hitting and hitting until she heard no sound again. To make sure the figure wouldn't move again, Jane brought a rope and asked the others to help her tie the person up. "Is it over now?" Fred, a Class B student, asked. "Not yet...let's tie him there," Jane said, pointing at the tree where she had hidden. They tied the person to the tree, and Jane suggested that they should try contacting the police. Another student suggested that they remove the figure's mask so they could see who was responsible for all the horrors they had faced. "Okay," Jane said softly, and slowly removed the mask. ...The students gasped in shock as they saw the face of their vice principal, Mr. Harrison. The same man who had taught them, guided them, and smiled at them every day. Moments later, the police arrived and arrested Mr. Harrison. The students gave their statements, still trying to process the horror they had faced. Jane met her friend Kate and was glad to see her alive. But as they hugged, Jane couldn't shake off the feeling of loss. So many parents were heartbroken and furious when they found out what had happened to their kids. The news went live on air, and some parents did protests for the government to shut down the school. It was also announced that Mr. Harrison had murdered a total of sixteen students, including Julia and Lucas. The school was soon shut down as a result. Jane didn't want to believe that her friends Beauty and Cherish would no longer be in her life. The suspect, Mr. Harrison, was found guilty of illegal trade, series of murder, and was sentenced to death by electrocution. Lucas's elder brother, who had lost his younger sibling to Mr. Harrison's brutality, was present during the trial. As soon as he saw the police agents escorting Mr. Harrison, he moved quickly and slashed Mr. Harrison on the face with a sharp, blunt knife. He then ran off before the police could stop him. Mr. Harrison was then taken to the electrocution room, where he was first tortured by one of the agents who had lost his younger sister at the hands of Mr. Harrison. Mr. Harrison's tongue was chopped off before he was electrocuted. Ever since the incident, the school was never the same again. A written history was published, containing all the details of what had happened to the students. The author, Jane Miller, concluded the book with a haunting title: "Behind the Mask." Epilogue: Five Years Later Jane sat on the bench, staring out at the empty school grounds. It had been five years since that fateful day, five years since her life had changed forever. She thought back to the friends she had lost, to the terror they had faced, and to the aftermath that had left them all scarred. But she also thought about the strength they had found, the resilience that had carried them through. Jane's eyes wandered to the memorial that had been built in honor of the victims. Sixteen names were etched into the stone, a permanent reminder of the lives that had been lost. As she stood up to leave, Jane felt a sense of peace wash over her. She knew that she would always carry the scars of that day with her, but she also knew that she was stronger because of it. The school had been demolished, a new one built in its place. But for Jane, the memories of that day would always linger, a reminder of the horrors that humans were capable of, and the strength that could be found in the face of adversity. As she walked away from the memorial, Jane felt a sense of closure. She knew that she would always remember, but she also knew that she was ready to move on. The mask had been lifted, and she had seen the horrors that lay beneath. But she had also seen the strength of the human spirit, and that was what she chose to hold onto. THE END
