Chapter Four: Unease Moments later, Jane and her friends burst into the classroom, their chatter and laughter filling the air. The scent of freshly sharpened pencils, worn textbooks, and the faint hint of cafeteria food wafted through the room. Sunlight streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow on the vibrant posters adorning the walls. "I'm so glad you won," Kate said, beaming, her bright blue eyes sparkling. "Thanks," Jane replied, smiling, feeling a surge of pride. "I bet she's hiding her pathetic face now," Beauty added, rolling her eyes, her long, curly brown hair bouncing with the motion. "Who?" Jane asked, raising an eyebrow, her voice tinged with curiosity. "Julia, of course. I'm so glad she lost terribly... so glad," Beauty said, her voice dripping with satisfaction, a sly grin spreading across her face. Jane shot Beauty a warning glance, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Hey, watch your mouth. To rejoice over someone's loss isn't a good thing." Kate chimed in, "There you go again with your saint talk. It's not like we wanted her to lose, but her pride was too much. I'm glad she lost so she won't be feeling too proud again." The group sighed, and their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of their classmates. Some congratulated Jane on her win, shaking her hand or patting her on the back. The sound of chairs scraping against the floor, backpacks zipping, and muted conversations filled the room. As they settled into their seats, Jane noticed the classroom's decorations – vibrant posters of famous scientists, inspirational quotes, and colorful charts. The teacher's desk, cluttered with papers and pens, sat at the front of the room. All seemed well until Cherish, a quiet student with a shy smile, held up an earring. "Is this not an earring?" she asked her friend, her voice barely above a whisper. "Wait, let me see it," Jane requested, her curiosity piqued, her eyes locking onto the glinting metal. Cherish handed the earring to Jane, who examined it carefully, her fingers tracing the intricate design. The metal felt cool to the touch, and the small gemstone caught the light. "Mmm... this looks familiar," Jane said, her brow furrowed, her mind racing. "Isn't it for bitchy Julia?" Kate asked rudely, earning another warning glance from Jane. But Jane's mind was already racing. She recalled Julia's confrontation in the washroom a week ago and the exact same earring Julia wore. The memory of Julia's angry face, her blazing eyes, and the earring glinting in the fluorescent light flashed through Jane's mind. "What's her earring doing here? This isn't her class," Jane wondered aloud, her voice tinged with concern. Simon, a tall guy with messy brown hair, suggested, "It might have fallen off, and she didn't know." Cherish asked, "But what was she doing here? This isn't her class." Beauty scoffed, "Probably looking for Jane's belongings to destroy since she lost to Jane in the competition." Jane felt a shiver run down her spine. Something was off. The air seemed to thicken, and the sounds around her faded into the background. She glanced out the window and caught a glimpse of someone standing outside, wearing a white mask and dressed in black. Her heart skipped a beat. The figure stood motionless, like a statue, as if watching her. "Guys, I think something's wrong," Jane said, her voice barely above a whisper, her eyes fixed on the figure. Kate followed her gaze. "What is it?" But when they looked again, the person vanished. "Must have been my imagination," Jane muttered, but the unease lingered. As the class began, Jane's mind wandered. Who was the mysterious figure? What did they want? Was Julia involved? The teacher's voice drifted into the background as Jane's thoughts consumed her. She couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. The classroom's warmth and familiarity now felt suffocating. Jane's eyes darted around the room, searching for any sign of the mysterious figure. But there was nothing. Just her imagination? Or something more? As the lesson progressed, Jane's anxiety grew. She couldn't focus on the teacher's words, her mind racing with possibilities. Who was watching her? And why? The bell rang, signaling the end of the class. Jane gathered her belongings, her movements mechanical. "Hey, you okay?" Kate asked, noticing Jane's distant expression. "Yeah, I'm fine," Jane replied, forcing a smile. But she wasn't fine. Something was brewing, and Jane was determined to uncover the truth.
