Chapter 1

Evenly pushed the door open as she tried to exit her boss's office. It was her obligation to ensure she wiped the workplace clean each morning before his arrival. “I’m sorry, sir.” She bumped into her boss and mistakenly spilled a cup of water on his shirt. It was a very tense moment because she could see her boss fuming with anger. “What is the matter with you?” Lucas asked angrily. He had just arrived at the office in a terrible mood, and this was not the way he wanted to start his day. It showed just how careless Evenly had been. “I’m really sorry, sir,” Evenly said, pleading for mercy from her boss. However, Lucas was a man who rarely let a mistake go unpunished. “I will let you off today because it’s just a cup of water. Next time, you’ll be pleading for me to let you live,” he threatened, his face stern and firm. “Thank you so much, sir.” She quickly scurried away before he could change his mind. “That was close,” Evenly muttered under her breath. She still had other areas of the company to clean. “Good morning, Rebecca,” she said. She was on her way to the changing room when she met Rebecca walking gracefully into the company. Rebecca and Evenly had been friends since high school. Evenly never had the opportunity to attend university, but Rebecca did. “Hi there, Evenly. You look stressed this morning. I hope everything is alright.” She could easily read the expression on Evenly’s face. “Yes, I just spilled a cup of water on the boss this morning. I barely escaped his wrath,” she answered, heaving a deep sigh of relief. “That was close. He’s easy to anger,” Rebecca said with a smile as she gave Evenly a gentle pat on the back. Rebecca walked to her office while Evenly returned to her work. When Evenly finished for the day, she used the little money she had to do some grocery shopping. Her mother was alone at home, so she was eager to return quickly and prepare lunch for her. “Mum! I’m home!” she announced as she entered the house. The house was unusually quiet, which made Evenly worried. “Mum?” she called out as she walked toward her mother’s room. She noticed the kettle whistling in the kitchen, so she quickly went to turn it off. Confused and troubled, she approached her mom’s room. She pushed the door open slowly, and her eyes were greeted by a rather troubling and shocking sight. Her mother was lying on the floor, unconscious and unaware of her surroundings. “Mum! Mum!! Mum!!!” Evenly rushed to where her mother lay and tried to check if she was still alive. Her mother wasn’t responding, and there were droplets of blood on the floor. She found no visible injury on her mother’s body. This suggested it wasn’t the result of any external harm. Without wasting much time, Evenly who was trying to regain control of her emotions grabbed her phone and called an ambulance. In less than ten minutes, the ambulance arrived and rushed her mother straight to the hospital. Evenly paced the waiting room as she waited for a response from the doctor or nurses who had taken her mother into the emergency ward. Evenly was not ready to lose her mother now. Her mother was the only person she had while growing up. She had been raised and nurtured single-handedly by her mother. She had watched her mother go through hell just to ensure they both survived. The only memory Evenly had of her father was seeing him leave the house for work when she was still four years old. Unfortunately, he never returned. The only news that brought him back into her life was the report of his death. “Please, just sit down, ma. The doctor will be with you shortly,” the nurse at the reception tried to calm Evenly. “I can’t. It’s impossible. I can’t be calm while my mother is in there fighting for her life,” Evenly replied. She found it hard to accept the nurse’s advice. Evenly could no longer hold back her emotions. She broke down in tears, overwhelmed by everything that was happening. As she struggled to control her tears, the doctor walked quickly into the reception area. “Doctor! My mother, how is she?” she asked anxiously. Her face was filled with fear and tension. “Miss Evenly, right? The daughter of Mrs. Theresa?” he asked. “Yes, sir,” she affirmed with a nod. “Follow me,” he said, ushering her into his office. He gestured for her to sit, and she did so immediately. Evenly’s breathing and heart rate had increased, and she couldn’t stop sweating profusely as anxiety took over. “How is my mother? Please, tell me, doctor,” she pleaded. The doctor seemed to be gathering himself as he sat properly in his chair. “Relax, ma’am. Your mother is fine. She is not dead. I need you to calm down,” he said. A wave of immense relief washed over Evenly. She heaved a deep sigh and wiped the sweat from her face with the headscarf she was holding. “Can I go and see her now?” She started to stand up quickly. “Wait! I haven’t finished with you yet,” the doctor called, stopping her immediately. From the look on his face, Evenly could tell the doctor had something very important to say. “Your mother, I found something. Here is the test result.” He handed her the report.
