The workplace was filled with cold silence as the two of them just stared at each other.
Lucas tried to read her expression, while Evenly was simply terrified.
“I didn’t hear you clearly. Can you repeat what you just said?” Lucas asked firmly. The edge in his tone sent a fresh wave of fear through Evenly’s nerves.
“Please, sir, I… I need… I need your assistance, sir,” she stuttered. It was obvious that fear had completely taken over her.
She was actually sweating in an air-conditioned office.
“What exactly do you want me to do? What is this all about?” he asked.
Even if he decided to help her, he needed to know exactly where his money would be going. That was how a businessman thought.
“My mother. She needs a heart transplant urgently, and I don’t have enough money to cover the cost,” Evenly explained.
“How much are we talking about?” Lucas asked. The conversation was moving much more smoothly and quickly than Evenly had expected.
“One million dollars. That’s the cost of the transplant,” she said, dropping the bombshell.
Lucas’s face twisted with a troubled expression.
“That’s a huge amount of money. Are you asking for a loan?” he asked curiously.
“If that’s what you’re willing to do for me, then I’ll gladly accept, sir,” she replied.
Evenly knew that such a sum wasn’t particularly difficult for him to provide.
“Loan you the money? Are you out of your mind? That’s an enormous amount,” he responded, clearly shocked.
Without wasting another second, Evenly dropped to her knees and began pleading. It was the only thing she could think of that might move him.
“I’m not going to give you a loan. But I think I have something better for you,” he said.
Evenly looked up into his eyes and could see how serious he was. She could hardly believe it.
Lucas was actually offering to help her but this was no time to celebrate. She still had no idea what form the help would take.
“Come back tomorrow. The papers will be ready by then,” he said, dismissing her from his office.
Evenly didn’t hesitate. She quickly left.
It was her day off, so she went straight home and prepared breakfast for her mother.
She took the food with her to the hospital. “Good morning, Mum,” she greeted cheerfully.
Her mother was awake but looked extremely weak. “How are you, Evenly?” she asked, trying to sit up straighter.
Evenly gently pressed her back down. “Don’t worry, Mum. You need to rest. The doctor said you should avoid anything strenuous.”
“Rebecca came by earlier. She brought something for me to eat this morning,” her mother said.
Evenly I was surprised. She hadn’t expected Rebecca to visit after the way she had sounded on the phone.
“I’ll call her right now and thank her,” Evenly said. She stepped aside, pulled out her phone, and made the call.
“My darling. How are you?” Rebecca answered.
“I’m fine. Mum told me you came to see her. Thank you so much,” Evenly said without hesitation.
“It’s nothing. I just want Mum back on her feet soon,” Rebecca replied warmly.
They chatted briefly before hanging up.
Evenly had managed to keep the full truth from her mother so far. That was yet another reason she desperately needed to secure the money soon.
Meanwhile, Lucas had his PA prepare a contract document.
“I can’t help her without getting something in return,” he thought to himself, resting his hand under his chin.
He had decided on a contract with Evenly, but he still wasn’t entirely sure what kind it should be.
While he was deep in thought, Rebecca walked briskly into his office.
“What is my baby thinking about his face looking so troubled?” she asked, sitting directly on his lap without a second thought.
“Get off my lap, Rebecca. We’re still in my office,” he said sternly.
Lucas didn’t want his employees to know about his relationship with Rebecca. He preferred to keep things strictly professional at work.
“That’s not fair, baby,” she whined as she stood up and sat in the chair across from him.
“I’ve given you my reasons many times,” Lucas said firmly.
Rebecca had no choice but to accept it. Lucas was clearly the dominant one in their relationship, and he made sure everyone knew it.
He might look handsome and gentle on the outside, but inside he was a completely different person.
The next morning, Evenly was filled with nervous excitement as she hurried to the office.
Lucas had arranged to meet her, but she still had no idea what his plan was.
As early as 7 a.m., she was already standing outside his office door after making sure the entire space was spotless and dust-free.
“Good morning, sir,” she greeted when he arrived an hour later.
“You’re here early, as usual,” Lucas said as he walked in and took his seat.
He gestured for her to come in and sit as well. She sat down once he was settled.
“Just to show some appreciation…” she began.
“You came because of the money, right?” Lucas interrupted.
“Yes, sir. I will be—”
“Marry me, Evenly,” Lucas said suddenly, looking straight at her with an unflinching expression.
Evenly, completely stunned and confused, stared back at him in disbelief.
“I don’t understand, sir,” she replied.
“Are you deaf? Marry me, Evenly,” he repeated.
The seriousness in his voice left no room for doubt he was completely serious.
