4. Such a Snob

1715 Words
Mira’s POV At work like any other normal day for me, although I wouldn’t really call it work because I am an internee at the accounts office at some hospital in my hometown. I went to our cash office in the outpatient wing to collect receipts from last night and also to check on my cousin, Army. On my way back, I walked past someone. I think that someone said something, but I didn’t get it because I usually walk so fast. I didn’t register what was said, so I thought maybe the person wasn’t talking to me after all. I just went my way. As I entered my office, I looked through my office window and saw someone looking in my direction. I went closer to the window to take a closer look because I felt like whoever that was, was watching me. Looking closer, I saw some well-dressed lady standing there watching me. Didn’t I just see those clothes a while ago, navy blue khaki and black boots…...did she follow me? When I looked keenly, I realized it was the person I walked past earlier. And here I thought it was a man. She dresses like a man, wait! She’s a tomboy! My mouth was wide open. I finally looked at her well. She was in a navy blue khaki, black V-neck t-shirt which was a bit loose, a navy blue blazer, and black boots. It was her, it finally clicked in my head. I creased my temple, I was stunned. She looked sharp. She must have said something to me earlier. I hope she wasn't a patient who needed help with something and I just passed her that quickly. I wish I had heard what she said. I decided to go and help her out. Maybe she was lost, and if she was a patient she'd definitely have been lost. She’s on the administration block. As I rounded the table, reached the door, looking up to where she was standing, she was gone. Where the hell did she go? Was I dreaming? How could she move so fast!? I was killing myself with questions that I didn’t have answers to. She must have noticed me and she left. That was the best explanation I could gather. ............... At Army’s office, I was bored back at my office all alone and there was nothing to do. I decided to go hang out with Army and Cody her colleague. Glued to my phone chatting with Wren, who is my annoying ass boyfriend. We were arguing about me not going over to see him over the weekend. Someone knocked on the door softly as if the door could break if they added more force. Before anyone answered, the door swung open and someone walked in. I didn’t look at who it was at first because I was busy replying to Wren. I was getting annoyed with his whining about nothing. Whoever it was walked in went straight to Army and Cody without even saying hi to me. How rude! I scoff. The person must have been blind or just pretended that they didn’t see me. Before the person said anything to them, I raised my head to see who it was. The person was in black khaki, a brown pull-neck, and black boots. I was wondering who it was until I heard a voice. Then it dawned on me, it was a lady. Her hair was in locks, very neat locks. She must have snobbed me, she ignored me on purpose. it must be the lady from my office. Mmh such a snob! She was so rude! She chatted a little with them and left without sparing me a glance. Wow, just wow! I just scoffed at her actions. It was as if she wasn’t comfortable with me there. Wow, that was crazy. How can someone so good-looking and smart be so rude? That was beyond me. As soon as she was out the door I couldn’t hold my question in anymore. “Who the hell was that?” I questioned, pulling closer to my cousin. “Our friend, she works at the Department of Public Health,” Army answered. “She is such a snob,” I whined before I could hold my tongue. Army just smiled at me. “She’s the most easygoing person I know,” Army said after a long silence. I was left wondering how they got close. They seemed pretty close. Ignoring each other became the order of the day. I learned about her, Ally, her colleague, and Cody were lunch buddies. I like good food, so I was always wondering if where they had their lunches was a nice place. I could have asked my cousin, but she’s a snack person. They seemed to be close, and I liked it. It reminded me of my friends back at the university. As I was spending more time at my cousin’s office, I realized Jay was always stealing glances at me. I had started wondering if I was overthinking, or was I right? Was she really looking at me? The days moved swiftly, and I could swear I caught my cousin’s friend checking me out a few times. There was a time I caught her staring at me. Even her friend Ally saw it. She looked at me and then back to her. I stood there not knowing what to do. I froze under her stare, it was like I lost the will to move under her intense gaze. When I saw Ally looking at me, I got out of my frozen state and walked away quickly. My cheeks were flashing red. I wonder why she keeps staring at me, and we don't even like each other. Okay, maybe calling it like not liking each other is a strong word because it’s not the case, it is more like we are ignoring each other. With others, she looks different. Although she seldom laughs with them, you can see her face lit up every time they are together. I always wonder why she is so different. She’s preserved, and rarely laughs or smiles, you wouldn’t tell if she is mad or not. Another thing was she kept her cycle of friends small, and Cody was the only male person she associated with. It was as if she didn’t want to be too close with other male colleagues or more, like they made her uncomfortable. She talks to Cody comfortably though. Noticing all this because I am observant and am a bit new here too. So don’t think I was curious about her…... or am I? A few days passed by. Every day at the front office I would see her. It happened a few times when I went to pick up receipts. I was starting to wonder if she was ever doing her work at all. She didn’t seem busy to me. It was like she was overworking her colleague. Ally seemed to have noticed me watching her a few times. I was fascinated by her in a way. Her dress code was always cute and smart, and the way she carried herself and her confidence was just amazing. I like her locks, ever so neat. She amazes me even though she is an ass, she got me wondering about her. How I wish we had started on a good path. We could have been friends, maybe. I was so lost in my thoughts looking at Jay from Army’s office window. She was seated outside when I heard Army clear her throat. She startles me. I turned my head to look at her and I found her looking at me with her brows knitted. Damn, she caught me staring like a freak. I don’t know what I will do to get out of this situation. I know Army and I know she will be on my case. Before I could ask her why she was looking at me like that, she spoke first. “What the hell was that, Mira?” she asked, raising her brows. “It was nothing. What did I do this time?” I decided to act up. “You know it is rude to stare,” Army “I wasn’t staring, give me the receipts I need to go back to work,” I had to get out of there before Ally came and joined the conversation. If she does, I will be finished. “Okay, here, go on and run along.” Army “Oh please, give me a break.” I snorted and took the receipts forcefully from her hand and was on my heels to get away from there. That was the best I could do. I got out and hurriedly left. On my way to the office, I felt like someone had eyes on me and I decided to look back, only to find Jay watching me keenly. Damn, she is watching me again. I think she is not even aware that I have caught her. Then Ally comes and nudges her side with her elbow, something she really likes doing when she wants to get your attention. Immediately, I knew now Ally would be on her case. She’s quite a busybody. I went my way quickly getting out of sight. When I got to my office, I took a seat and started wondering about that lady. Why does she make people so curious? I know I am not the only one. I overheard some female nurses talking about her when I passed their nursing station. I couldn’t help but listen in on them. “Guys, have you seen the new girl at the public health department?” Nurse 1 “Yeah, I saw her the other day with Ally,” Nurse 2 “She’s such a stud. She kills it with the way she dresses.” Nurse 3 “I wish she was a man. I couldn’t let her escape me.” Nurse 2 “You can tell she has great fashion tastes. I will try my luck too.” Nurse 1 “She dresses so nicely, more than so many men out there. I like her.” Nurse 3 “Too bad she is a girl.” Nurse 2.
