Amaryllis POV
The waiter walks away from my table and I start devouring my burger, unapologetically. hey... a girl's gotta eat, right? Once I'm done with my food, I lean back in my chair. Pffft, boy I'm a stuffed. I dont think I can walk after this I just need a bed and a pillow right here and right now. . I sit for about ten minutes before the waiter Jayjay comes back and ask if I want anything else. oh no, I think I went a little heavy handed with the burger. I'm stuffed. He gives me a quick giggle, before he says he will be right back with the bill.
For the past 20 minutes I was in a relationship with the burger I didn't notice that the cafe was actually packed by now. I take a glance at my watch and notice that it was lunch time. well, damn that was fast, Thank God I actually managed to eat a few minutes before lunch.
Jayjay comes back with the bill, hands it to me. I ask him... who i can talk to regarding the job opening before I hand him back the bill, that now had my cash payment. Oh darling you can talk to Susan, she is the the red haired over there. He points out towards the counter. I thank him and tell him to keep the change from the bill.
I make my way towards the counter and approach the red haired lady. Susan looks middle aged, spikey red hair. I notice the 5 piercings on each of her ears, oh and the nose ring. she has on ripped Jean's and a t-shirt that says suck on it, that has a name badge written Susan. She must have been a wild one back in her days.
Excuse me hi... I was told to talk to you regarding the waitresing job? The lady raises her eyebrows and flashes me a smile and says. oh jah, hi I'm Susan Kempton the owner but you can call me Su. Are you interested in the position?
yes I am and I'm Amaryllis, I smile back.
Please follow me this way, she says. I follow her into the kitchen, she walks past it and heads straight for the door ahead of us. she opens the door goes in and sits behind a desk.
uhmm excuse the mess and please take a sit. I take a sit opposite her and glance around while she fidgets with loads of paperwork on her desk.
There is a desk stacked with papers everywhere, two chairs on either side of it, shelves on the wall, a two seater couch to my left and a desk top and printer. pretty much office standard, nothing out of the ordinary.
We have been a little busy lately and I had to help with waiting the tables cos I'm under staffed. So as you can see I have unattended paperwork, she continues.
oh no problem, dont worry about the mess. I just hope I can help. That's if I get the job.
I see you going straight for it; I like that, she says.
oh sorry yes... I recently moved here and I'm just settling in and would like something that would pay rent and keep me fed. I live around the corner actually, this will be ideal for me. Geez, I hope i dont sound desperate. I think to my self.
Ok... here is an application form just fill it in for me and this is my card, please email me your cv. And I will give you a call in the next few days. She hands me her business card and the application form.
I glance over the application form, the bottom of the page asks for references and experience. Crippled with fear, I didn't really think about that. I cant have anyone calling asking about me. Plus Maryllis only started existing a few days ago. Susan must have noticed, my panicked state.
Everything all right, she asks. uhm yeah... I dont have much experience, back home. I pretty much was self employed.
Really, no problem... what did ya do, she asks. Mostly graphic design. I told her a little white lie. She doesn't need to know the rest. I mean, I had a full time job at the post office, and mostly did my graphic design stuff on the side. But that's all in the past, right now. Su looks hesitant about my respond but brushes it away. she smiles and says...
I Guess you must have big dreams to leave your own business and come here to walk for someone else, she states.
To be honest I think I have a better chance here. she doesn't know it but those words hold more alot more weight to them. Because I really do have a better chance of survival here than back home... how long you been here, Su asks.
It's my second day here in San Francisco. I didn't expect my voice to be coarse. I know I did the right think coming here. It's just bitter sweet that I have to change a few things about myself. I push back any negative thoughts and look back up at Su.
she looks at my with empathy and says I dont know what got you here but you are here now for a reason. Let's give you a reason to stay, so I think a job here will do the trick. what do you say? she winks at me.
I'm so shocked right now, that my eyes are probably the size of oranges. I.. uh.. I'm sorry , I'm just abit stunned.
Relax, everyone deserves a second chance, I know I did at some point in my life. So, how about you start tomorrow.
We can start you off with abit of training, so you get properly acquainted with the way we work here and the people ofcourse.
Su has this genuine aura around her, which makes me comfortable. I can just feel the warmth radiating from her and her smile is contagious.
Since my escape from Alex, I have been having my guard up at all times. Mostly out of fear that he might be tracking me and someone I talk to for more than 5 minutes might help him, without them not even knowing it.
Yes, yes.. tomorrow will be just fine. what time should I be here? i ask.
We all get in at 6:15 and prep for 7... Thank you so much, I really appreciate it... I'm probably grinning like a fool at this point. Oh, darling you just do a good job and I will be happy, says Su.
she walks me out the office, points out to the kitchen and says this the kitchen and that's the chef, Marko. Upon hearing his name, Marko faces us. Hey, ladies. Su simply says new girl, she starts tomorrow. Her name is Amaryllis. Please, Amary is fine with me, I say.
oh a beautiful name for a beautiful girl, says Marko. I notice he has an accent, before I can say anything. Su tells him to work more and flirt less. Aahh ok my beautiful boss, he says and blows her a kiss. Su just rolls her eyes and laughs at his antics.
Dont worry about him, he is Italian and flirts with anything. I laugh at Su's comment, as we head out the the front of the cafe. Su walks me out and tells me she will see me tomorrow. We says our goodbyes and I thank her once more.
