The moon hung high, its light filtering through the thick canopy of leaves, illuminating the path Serena took as she fled from the confrontation. Her heart pounded in her chest, each beat echoing the turmoil within her. She hadn’t expected to see Lucian again so soon, nor had she anticipated the way his mere presence could spark both anger and longing inside her. But she needed to escape. Every instinct told her to run from the pain he had caused, yet a part of her—a dangerous, reckless part—wanted to turn back, to confront him one last time. As she reached a clearing, her breath caught in her throat. There he stood, a silhouette against the moonlight, his powerful frame taut with tension. Lucian had followed her. “Serena,” he called, his voice a mix of urgency and regret. “You shouldn’t have run.” “Shouldn’t have run?” she shot back, fury igniting within her. “You’re the one who told me it was over. You don’t get to come here and act like you care!” The air between them crackled with unresolved tension, a storm brewing in the silence. Lucian stepped closer, his eyes dark with a blend of frustration and desire. “I didn’t want this. I didn’t want to hurt you.” “Then why did you?” Serena’s voice trembled with emotion. “Why did you leave me?” He hesitated, his gaze drifting away as if searching for the right words. “I had to protect my pack. I can’t just abandon my responsibilities.” “Responsibilities?” she scoffed, stepping closer to him, the heat between them undeniable. “You call abandoning your mate a responsibility?” Lucian closed the distance, his hands gripping her arms, his touch both tender and possessive. “I made a mistake,” he said, his breath hot against her skin. “But I still want you. I can’t help it.” Serena’s heart raced at his admission, but a wave of anger washed over her. “You can’t just say that after breaking my heart! I don’t know if I can trust you again.” Their faces were inches apart, and for a moment, the world around them faded. The yearning, the passion, all of it surged to the surface, blurring the lines between love and pain. “Serena, please…” Lucian’s voice dropped to a whisper, a plea that resonated deep within her. Before she could respond, the sound of snapping twigs broke the fragile moment, shattering the intimacy between them. Lucian’s eyes widened in alarm as he turned to face the direction of the noise. “Get back!” he shouted, pushing her behind him just as three figures emerged from the shadows, their eyes glinting with malice. The rogue pack had found them. “What do we have here?” one of them sneered, a tall, muscular wolf with a jagged scar running across his cheek. “Lucian with his little plaything. How cute.” Serena’s pulse quickened as the rogues advanced, their intentions clear. Panic coursed through her veins. “Lucian!” she cried, gripping his arm. “We need to run!” “No,” he growled, his voice low and dangerous. “We fight.” The lead rogue lunged at Lucian, and the two collided in a flurry of claws and teeth. Serena stood frozen for a moment, horror flooding her senses as she watched the man she loved battle for their lives. He moved with the grace of a predator, but each blow he dealt seemed to send a shockwave of dread through her. “Get back, Serena!” Lucian roared, throwing a rogue into a tree with a sickening crunch. The force of the impact sent a tremor through the ground, and Serena’s heart dropped. But the rogues were relentless. Another one charged at her, and she barely had time to react before Lucian was there, pushing her out of the way as he took the hit himself. The force sent him crashing to the ground, and she screamed. “Lucian!” He struggled to rise, but the rogue was quick, attacking again. Adrenaline surged through her, and without thinking, Serena lunged forward, claws bared, ready to defend him. But just as she reached the scuffle, a sharp pain shot through her side. She gasped, stumbling back to find a rogue had struck her. “Serena!” Lucian’s voice was filled with anguish as he fought for their lives. But Serena couldn’t let the pain stop her. The rage inside her burned hot, propelling her forward. She had to protect Lucian, to fight alongside him, despite the odds stacked against them. “Let her go!” Lucian growled, his voice echoing in the night as he fought off the remaining rogues. But they were too many. The lead rogue lunged at Serena again, and this time, she was ready. With a fierce growl, she swiped at him, claws grazing his shoulder. He howled in surprise, momentarily distracted. Lucian seized the opportunity, tackling the rogue to the ground. The two rolled, a tangle of fur and fury, but Lucian was losing ground. “Get back, Serena!” he shouted, the desperation in his voice cutting through her haze of anger. The remaining rogue circled her, taunting her as she tried to find her footing. “Look at you, so weak, so pathetic,” he mocked. “This is what your precious alpha has left you for? A life of misery?” “No!” Serena snapped, feeling a surge of defiance. She lunged at the rogue, her teeth bared. “You won’t hurt him!” But before she could reach him, Lucian was there again, throwing the rogue off balance. “Serena, stay back!” he barked. Ignoring his command, Serena attacked, and the rogue stumbled, caught off guard by her ferocity. But just as victory seemed within reach, the lead rogue lunged at Lucian, sinking his teeth into his shoulder. A pained howl erupted from Lucian as he fell to his knees, blood spilling onto the forest floor. “Lucian!” Serena screamed, the world around her spinning. Everything within her roared to life. She had to fight back. But as she scrambled to her feet, a wave of dizziness washed over her. The pain in her side flared, but she wouldn’t let it stop her. She couldn’t let Lucian fall. With a burst of determination, Serena summoned every ounce of strength she had left. She kicked out at the lead rogue, catching him off guard, and he released Lucian, sending him crashing to the ground. “Lucian, no!” The moment hung in the air like a fragile thread, everything moving in slow motion. Serena dove towards Lucian, but the lead rogue regained his composure, swiping at her with a powerful blow that sent her sprawling. “No!” she cried, scrambling to her feet. But the world spun around her, the pain in her side threatening to pull her under. “Stay away from her!” Lucian shouted, struggling to rise as he faced the lead rogue, who now stood over Serena, a malicious grin spreading across his face. “You think you can save her?” he sneered, eyes glinting with malice. “She’s just a pawn in this game. Just like you.” With a roar of rage, Lucian lunged at the rogue again, but the lead wolf dodged him easily. “You’ll regret this, Lucian. Your weakness is her downfall.” The rogue turned his attention back to Serena, his eyes narrowing. “Let’s see how strong she really is.” Serena’s heart raced as she faced him. “I’m not afraid of you!” she shouted, defiance surging within her. But as the rogue charged, Lucian interposed himself between them, shoving her back again. “Get back!” he roared, his voice laced with desperation. In that moment, everything shifted. With a fierce growl, Serena felt the primal power within her awaken. She had been holding back, but not anymore. She could feel the energy coursing through her veins, the wolf within demanding to be unleashed. As the rogue lunged again, she focused all her energy and pushed past the pain, leaping forward with a primal howl. The rogue hesitated, surprised by her ferocity. “Serena, no!” Lucian shouted, reaching out to stop her, but it was too late. The impact sent them both crashing to the ground, but Serena was fueled by determination. She clawed at the rogue, her instincts taking over as she fought to protect what was hers. The rogue howled in pain, but before Serena could finish him off, the remaining rogues regrouped, encircling them. Panic surged within her as she realized the odds were stacked against them. “Lucian!” she cried, desperately searching for him. But he lay injured on the ground, struggling to rise, his strength fading. “We have to go! Now!” But the lead rogue laughed darkly, blocking their escape. “You really think you can run from this? You’re trapped.” In that moment, the world seemed to close in around her. The fear, the pain, the weight of betrayal—all of it threatened to crush her spirit. But deep down, she felt the fire igniting within her, a refusal to be defeated. “Serena, run!” Lucian’s voice was strained but insistent. With a surge of adrenaline, she made her choice. She had to fight. “No
