“Well, I didn’t see a car anywhere,” I said grimly. “Or a scooter, or even a bike. She was on foot. Maybe she drove part of the way, but we won’t know for sure until she wakes up.” “Damn.” Then Lauren seemed to gather herself. “I have to get back, but just send word if there’s anything else she needs.” “I will.” She left then, and I folded my hands on my lap, willing myself to be calm and watchful. There wasn’t much else I could do, really. The day had been mild enough that no one had bothered to light a fire in the fireplace, although the logs and kindling had already been set up.
