The building could seat seven hundred, and every pew and space in the balcony was filled with colleagues, students he had touched, old friends, relatives, and some of the New Gnostics Ramsey recalled from the meeting. They sat together in a small group beneath a stained glass rendering of Heinrich Hoffman’s The Ascension.
