The Hunter’s Game

The city never looked so sharp. Every sound, every shadow, felt like a threat. Selene moved beside me with impossible grace, like she belonged to the danger around us. “We’re being watched,” she said quietly, her voice slicing through the city’s noise. “You need to learn quickly, Tristan.” I wanted questions, answers, clarity. Instead, I got riddles. We ducked into a side street. From the shadows, a figure appeared. He moved with silent intent. Selene tensed. “The Watchers,” she whispered. “The Watchers?” I asked. “They’re the ones who track everything… everyone like you.” My skin prickled. My power—the way my body healed—was not hidden. It had been noticed. And now they were here. The man stepped closer. He smiled, a cold, calculated smile. “Tristan,” he said. “You have no idea what’s coming.” I wanted to run, but Selene’s hand gripped mine. Her eyes didn’t soften. “You can survive this,” she said. “But only if you listen. Only if you trust no one.” The figure vanished into the shadows as quickly as he appeared. My pulse raced. Who was he? And why did he know my name? Selene turned to me, her gaze intense. “They will test you. And you will fail if you hesitate.” Before I could respond, my phone buzzed. A new message appeared, from an unknown number: “You think you’re safe. You’re already in the game.” I looked up. Across the street, someone—another watcher—stood motionless on the rooftop, the symbol from my mother’s letter glowing faintly on their chest. A cold realization hit me. The world I knew was gone.
