CHAPTER FOUR

1222 Words
Emma POV I spent a week in the hospital, then I returned back to my room in Queens. The new friends and neighbors I had gotten were happy to see. The house was decorated, and some of my clients were there with their kids. Everyone wanted to touch my child, they loved him. I felt the love and a half of me wanted to stay in Queens. I had already decided to start my life back home, I will have to leave everything behind. After the celebration, everyone left and I was alone with my son. I went to the cradle where my newborn baby laid. He was sleeping, I touched him and his breath was peaceful. I kissed his hair, and rubbed his head. Jayden, I will name him according to my dad. Weeks passed and my contract with the cleaning agency ended. I pack up and move back to my town, Brooklyn in New York. I rented a house on Seventh street, for me and Jayden. I went for weeks applying for a new job, but all four applications were declined. My supplies were running out, the money for Jayden feeding was exhausted. I was desperately in need of a job, a good paying job that could sustain Jayden and I. I had to do something, although I always love doing things on my own right now I needed someone's help. I picked up my phone and dialed Lucy's number. "Hello, Emma! It's a year now and I haven't heard anything from you. Where have you been? Are you okay?" Lucy said over the phone. "Hey, I'm doing good. Just trying to handle things over here, sorry that I haven't been in touch for a while now." "A while now? Emma! It's a year and a month now! For God sake where are you?" "I'm still in Brooklyn." "Here in Brooklyn? You gotta be kidding me. I heard you quit your job at mall..." "Yeah, I did," I cut her. "I left town for a while, to Queens. I did some jobs there for months before I got back." "There is something I need to tell you. I'm sorry that I haven't been honest to you for awhile, I had a lot on my mind and I thought I could handle it all alone." "What do you mean, Emma? You have a house, a job, and you're free from your aunt. What's the problem?" I struggled with the repulsive force that's preventing me from saying it out to Lucy. Fortunately, I defeated it. "I have a son." "What?" I could hear her froze. She scoffed, "You are joking, right?" "I'm more serious than you think. He looks so lovely," I smiled and Jayden whimpered and I stood up with the phone pressed to my ear with my shoulder. I picked him up to my arm and jiggled him a bit till he became calm. "That's his voice you're hearing." "What? Like... You're... Oh God! What is wrong with you? After everything you have to hide such a wonderful thing from me?" "I was confused, and I didn't know what to do and how to handle it. I don't even know who the father is. So I have to find a way to deal with it. "This little soul is the reason I have to work harder than before, Lucy. I have tried to get a good paying job that would help me take care of him, but I have found now. That's why I had to call you now." "Yeah, luckily you called the right person. There is an application for a secretary to the chairman of our firm, Lake Ventures. You can come and apply," Lucy said. "Really? Thank you very much, Lucy. I am very grateful for this offer, thank a million you have always been a big help to me." "Don't mention. Take care of your son, and tell his good aunt say hi," Lucy said and giggled. "Okay, I will," I chuckled. I took the last cash with me and took Jayden to a daycare and paid for his care. As I was leaving Jayden cried out loud, I turned and smiled at him and left. I was on my way to the interview, I took a quick bus and got to Lake Ventures building. I was directed to where I sat down waiting for my time to be interviewed. I was getting nervous, I wasn't so confident that I would get the job. Just like the other jobs I went for, I might be rejected for my incomplete educational qualifications. I didn't have a degree, I wondered how I would get the job in Lake Ventures. Lucy and the other staff I saw in the company were all graduates with bachelor and master degrees, some with double majors. I encouraged myself, believing that this would work for me. If it doesn't then I will try elsewhere, but I must definitely give Lake Ventures a try. It was my time for the interview. I went in and sat down, and they asked me some questions about my personal information which I answered. They asked for my qualifications and I gave it to them, there were three in the room but a seat was left vacant. "Where is your degree?" One of the interviewers asked as he looked at my resume. I breathed out silently and said, "I didn't finish college." Just then the door opened and a man walked in. "Sorry, I'm late," he went and sat down on the vacant seat. "You dropped out of school? Why?" One of the interviewers asked. The man who came in looked at me, stared with his black eyes. "Wait!" said the man who came in and the interviewer held his peace. "What's your name again?" "I am... Emma Stone." "Emma?" He recited my name, he nodded and rested his back on his seat and nodded. "Why are you here?" "I saw a job vacancy, that Lake Ventures was in need of a Secretary, so I had to give it a try." "A try. What makes you think you are the right person for the job?" The man asked. "I have to pay attention to details, manage time and project schedule, and also be good at keeping records on anything in a well-organized manner. I am sure that Lake Ventures will never regret having me." "But you don't have the qualifications..." said the interviewer who disapproved of me but the young man interrupted him. "That's enough, Brian. I am the one in need of the secretary, not you." "I'm sorry, Chairman," Brian said. The man turned to me, "Miss Emma Stone. I am Aaron Lake, the CEO of Lake Ventures. You are granted the position of the secretary to the Chairman. I want to see you here by Seven in the morning tomorrow. You can leave." I was so excited finally I had gotten a job. I walked passed a woman dressed on a long coat, she turned and looked at me. I smiled at her but her face was stern. "Mrs. Lake," a staff called and she turned her face to him and took a file from him. "Thank you," she replied and walked away. Mrs. Lake? Could that be the wife of the Chairman, my new boss?
