The man on the other end agreed without hesitation.
The moment Jessica ended the call, the roar of an engine blared right beside her ears.
She twisted sharply and dodged just in the nick of time, and immediately Lila threw a wild, screaming tantrum.
Damien, who had just come downstairs after finishing a meeting, witnessed the whole scene. He looked at her with obvious impatience.
"Jessica, how many times have I told you? You must always give way to Lila. Why do you keep making her upset again?"
Seeing Damien’s cold, stern face once more, Jessica instinctively trembled and shrank back.
All those terrifying memories from her past life came flooding back like a raging tide.
Every single time Lila tried to hurt her but failed, then wailed and refused to stop, Damien would say exactly those same words.
And right after that, he would go along with whatever Lila wanted, leaving her battered and broken all over.
The image of being cut open while still alive remained vividly etched in her mind.
She dug her fingernails deep into her palms and forced herself to stay calm.
In this life, she swore she would protect herself no matter what.
Burying the overwhelming hatred surging inside her, she prepared to explain herself.
But before a single word could leave her mouth, Lila rushed over sobbing and clung tightly to Damien’s arm.
"Damien, I wanted to play the knock-me-over game with Jessica, but she keeps dodging me. Does that mean she doesn’t like me anymore?"
Her tear‑streaked, heart‑wrenching look made Damien’s heartache instantly.
His annoyed gaze shifted straight toward Jessica. His voice sounded soft, yet carried a cruel, unyielding edge, "Jessica, if Lila keeps crying like this, it will ruin her recovery. Go over there and let her bump into you just once."
She stared at him in utter disbelief. Even though she had steeled herself long ago, she still wanted to scream the question aloud.
If Lila crying was bad for her health, then how was being run over and crippled supposed to be good for hers?
In her past life, Damien had only arrived after Lila had already struck her. When he found her lying in a pool of blood, struggling helplessly, he had flown into a rage at Lila for the very first time.
That day, he had held her limp, nearly lifeless body in his arms, his voice shaking with terror, "Jessica, you have to hold on. I cannot lose you."
But hearing him now so casually telling her to let Lila hit her, she felt as though every drop of blood in her veins had turned to ice.
She refused to ever relive those days trapped in a wheelchair, or the moment Lila had pushed her off a hillside so easily, all over again.
Jessica looked straight into Damien’s eyes and spoke in a firm, unwavering tone, "I will not risk my own body just so you two can play a dangerous game."
No sooner had the words left her mouth than tears began streaming down Lila’s face again.
She acted as if she saw nothing and turned to walk away, only to have her wrist seized firmly in Damien’s grip. Weariness seeped into his eyes as he spoke, "Jessica, Lila saved my life. You are supposed to be my wife. What harm is there in letting her bump you just once?"
There it was again, the exact same excuse.
The resentment and fury that had been building up for so long finally slipped through her control.
She wrenched her hand free forcefully and spat out each word with burning hatred, "We never even signed the marriage papers. How can you call me your wife? You are the one who owes her a debt, so why should I be forced to pay it on your behalf?"
Damien was stunned by the sheer loathing blazing in her eyes. He froze for a moment, then seemed to realize something.
"So this is what it is... you are angry because we haven’t registered our marriage yet. You know full well what happened on our wedding day with that explosion. Be good now. If you just comfort Lila and keep her happy, I promise I will go sign the papers with you tomorrow."
"Damien Wilcox, I do not want to register anything with you. I want nothing more to do with you. Do you understand that?"
