Chapter 4

1120 Words
Three disheveled, leering homeless men stood staring at Jessica's with lustful grins plastered across their faces. Ignoring the throbbing pain all over her body, she swung her legs over the bed and jumped down abruptly. But Lila grabbed her arm in an instant, her fingernails digging deep into the flesh, sending a searing, piercing pain shooting through her. Her voice sounded as innocent as a child’s, yet every word that fell from her lips was like a knife dipped in venom, sharp enough to flay a person alive. "Jessica, Damien says, I taste so sweet. What does that mean? He also says he loves playing special games with me in bed. I thought it was so much fun, so I found these three men to play with you too." Horror surged through her chest. She shoved Lila away with all her might and made a dash for the door, only to be blocked instantly by the three men. Her face turned deathly pale as she stared at Lila. "You are only pretending to be simple‑minded to hurt me. Aren’t you afraid Damien will find out and make you pay?" A flicker of malice flashed across Lila’s eyes, so fast it was almost impossible to catch, before her expression shifted back to pure innocence. She turned to the three men and said sweetly, "Hey, why don’t you go ahead and play with Jessica now?" No sooner had the words left her mouth than the three men lunged toward her with greedy, sneering grins. She struggled with every ounce of strength she had, but it was no match against their brute force. Rough hands roamed wildly over Jessica's body, and Lila’s shrill, triumphant laughter rang loudly in her ears. "This is so fun! Come on, play the same active game we play with Jessica!" Just as her clothes were being torn open and despair threatened to swallow her whole, the bedroom door was suddenly kicked open with a deafening crash. Damien stormed inside, his entire aura radiating a terrifying, murderous chill. The moment he saw Jessica surrounded by the three men, her clothes half‑torn and disheveled, his eyes turned razor‑sharp and icy. He grabbed the two men, pinning her down and hurled them hard against the floor. Then he drew a dagger, lunged at the third man, and drove the blade deep into his body without hesitation. Wails and screams of agony instantly filled the whole room. "Jessica!" Damien strode quickly toward her. But the second he caught sight of Lila huddled trembling in the far corner, his face changed completely. He immediately turned around, rushed over, scooped her into his arms, and pressed his palm firmly over her eyes. "This is too ugly and filthy, you must not look." Jessica’s heart clenched tight. A memory suddenly flashed vividly in her mind, the time she had once been kidn*pped by Damien’s deadliest rival. Damien was a man of intense pride and old‑fashioned protectiveness. No matter how much blood he spilled or what dangers he endured outside, he always insisted on shielding her innocence and soft heart. He never let her witness his ruthless, merciless side when dealing with enemies. Even back then, when he had charged in to rescue her, fought hand‑to‑hand with the rival, and nearly had a gun pressed against his own temple, the first thing he had done before striking back was to reach out and cover her eyes gently. It was exactly because he had truly protected her like that once, time and again, that even when he chose Lila over her and hurt her so deeply later, she had still found reasons to forgive him over and over. Lila’s curious voice pulled Jessica’s gaze back. She watched as Lila pried Damien’s hand away, swept her gaze calmly over the groaning, bloodied men on the floor, and spoke in a voice that sounded pure as ever. "Damien, I found these people to play the same game we play with Jessica. Aren’t you happy?" Damien froze for a few seconds. After a brief pause, he softened his expression, reached out, and stroked her head gently. "I am not unhappy at all. As long as you are happy, that is all that matters." "Really?" Lila’s face lit up with sudden excitement. "Then I want to play the stabbing game too!" Before anyone could react, she quickly snatched up the dagger lying on the floor. Right before Jessica could even blink, Lila drove the blade straight into her lower abdomen, then pulled it out just as swiftly. "Jessica!" An excruciating, blinding pain erupted through her entire body, making her tremble uncontrollably from head to toe. Her eyes bulged, blood seeping fast between her fingers as she pressed hard against the wound. She lifted her head with great effort, only to see Damien lunging over, not toward her, but toward Lila. He grabbed her wrist tightly, his face twisted with sheer panic. "Let me see. Are you hurt anywhere? Did the blade nick you?" Seeing him so utterly frantic over the culprit, yet not even sparing a single glance at her bleeding body, Jessica felt nothing but biting irony. All the debts she owed him in her previous life had long been paid in full. Why, in this life, did she still have to endure such cruel treatment? All the hatred and resentment that had been building up burst through every barrier at that moment. Forgetting completely the agreement she had made with that powerful man in New York, she bent down, picked up the dagger, and lunged straight toward Lila. But the very moment the tip pricked Lila’s skin, Damien reacted instantly. He kicked Jessica hard in the chest, sending her flying backward. She crashed heavily onto the unforgiving hard floor. The impact jolted her already injured bones, and a cold sweat broke out instantly, soaking her skin. Lila let out a piercing shriek, clutching her arm, and the sound made Damien’s face turn ashen‑white. "Jessica, you really are beyond hope!" His voice shook with uncontrollable rage. "Lila only wanted to play a harmless game with you, yet you are so vicious that you dare try to hurt her? I was actually planning to take you down to city hall and make our marriage official today, but clearly there is no longer any need." Furious beyond words, his eyes burned like sharp blades piercing right through her. Finally, amidst Lila’s continuous wails, he wrapped her tightly in his arms and stormed out of the room without another backward glance. Jessica lay on the cold floor, watching his retreating figure, as darkness slowly closed in around her vision.
