Chapter 5

When Jessica opened her eyes again, two full days had already passed. The nurse noticed she had woken up but had not spoken a single word all day, so she struck up a conversation. "The powerful man in the next suite had just proposed to his fiancée, and she said yes. He was so overjoyed that he prepared gifts for every doctor, nurse, and patient on this whole floor. "Would you like to step outside for a little walk? You could pick up a gift too while you are out." Seeing Jessica’s eyes shift slightly, the nurse thought she might be interested and quickly pulled out her phone to show a photo. In the picture, Damien was down on one knee in front of Lila, his eyes brimming with nothing but tenderness and adoration. Lila wore a smile as pure and innocent as a young child’s. Watching them look so full of hope and happiness, Jessica could not help but sneer coldly inside her heart. Go ahead and enjoy this while you can, your good days will not last much longer. Since Jessica remained completely silent, the nurse awkwardly tucked her phone away and left the room. For the next several days, Jessica stayed inside her hospital room without stepping out, until a sudden commotion and Lila’s piercing cries echoed from the hallway. She climbed out of bed at once, but before she could even reach the door, it was kicked open with a thunderous crash. Damien stormed in, his face twisted with rage, and rushed straight up to her. Without a word, he raised his hand and struck her hard across the cheek. Her cheek went numb instantly, and a metallic, coppery taste spread through her mouth. "Jessica, have you gone mad? How dare you send Lila away to the asylum?" Before she could even react, two bodyguards stepped forward, seized her arms, and forced her roughly down onto her knees against the floor. "I did not do anything—" Jessica tried instinctively to explain, but her words were cut short the moment Lila came rushing into the room. "Damien, I don’t want to go to that asylum! I don’t want to be taken away from you!" Lila wailed, clinging tightly around his waist, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe. Then she seemed to notice Jessica for the first time, her face turning deathly pale. She instantly dropped to her knees, crawling toward Jessica and begging frantically. "I know I was wrong! I promise I will never cling to Damien again! Please don’t hurt me anymore! I will go to the asylum quietly, just please stop being angry!" She knelt there, repeatedly knocking her forehead against the floor, over and over. Damien immediately bent down, scooped her up into his arms, and gently pushed up her sleeve. The moment he saw the fresh welts and marks criss‑crossing her skin, his expression darkened like a storm cloud. He turned his cold, furious gaze straight to Jessica. "You actually hurt her and then forced her to kneel and beg you? It seems I must teach you a harsh lesson once and for all before you finally learn your place." He glanced sharply at the bodyguards and ordered, "Make her bow and knock her head one hundred full times as an apology to Lila. She will not stand again until every single one is counted." Jessica felt nothing but bitter, biting irony. Her blood boiled with fury, and she lifted her head to scream back at him. "Why do you condemn me without even listening to my side? I truly did absolutely nothing!" The tears streaming down her face startled Damien, and a flicker of hesitation crossed his eyes. But before he could open his mouth, Lila buried herself deeper against his chest and whimpered, "She looks so terrifying… it scares me so much." When Damien looked back at Jessica again, there was nothing left in his eyes but icy indifference. He spat out one sharp word, "Start." At his command, the guards pressed down hard on the back of Jessica's head and forced her forehead to slam heavily against the cold tiles. "One." Agony exploded through her skull, instantly blanking out every thought in her mind. "Two." Tears welled up uncontrollably and spilled down to splash onto the floor beneath her. ...... "One hundred." By the final count, blood and tears blurred her vision completely. She was thrown roughly onto her side, every inch of her body screaming with such fierce pain that she could not utter even a single sound. "Sir, should we keep going?" one guard asked. Damien waved a hand sharply. "Drag her straight to the asylum. She will not be released until she admits what she has done and begs for forgiveness." Jessica was hauled roughly across the floor. As she was dragged past him, she gathered every last drop of remaining strength and rasped in a hoarse, broken voice, "Damien, I hate you! I will hate you forever!" His body stiffened abruptly, yet he did not turn back or stop them, he let her be pulled away. Later, Damien brought Lila to the best private clinic for a full medical examination. While she was inside the consulting room, he stood waiting alone, and the image of Jessica’s eyes, filled with such hollow, lifeless despair as she declared she hated him, flashed vividly through his mind. An inexplicable sense of unease and panic rose suddenly inside his chest. He shook his head hard to push the strange feeling aside, then called his personal assistant over. "I know if we do not register the marriage properly, she will never feel truly secure, but I also gave my word that I would give Lila a proper, grand wedding. Arrange everything for the wedding as soon as possible. Once the ceremony is finished, we will go straight to bring Jessica back home." The assistant stood rigid, his face draining of all colors. The words that came out of his mouth made cold dread creep straight up Damien’s spine. "Sir… Madam was just abducted by a group of armed men not long ago. "At the same time, all your overseas bank accounts have been frozen completely, and word has just come in from the streets... your rivals have officially issued a contract on your life, dead or alive."
