The distance between the two estates was short. Olive and orange groves ran side by side, in some places separated by rough wicker fences, in others, open. The vineyards, which covered the surrounding hillsides, had boundaries clearly marked. A rough pathway ran from the Sclerus"s villa to both his neighbours" homes. Along the one leading to the General"s, Nikolias strode, dressed in a simple green tunic and sandals. A short sword dangled from his belt, and he carried it more out of habit than for personal defence, although he was wary of other "visitors" assailing him, sent by the Empress. The message the man brought in the night unsettled him. With Maniakes dead, his association with the great man may put him in great danger.
