Alone with him

Chapter Five Lisa, not being too friendly, hasn't made any friends yet. She only had Margaret, who is always busy as the head girl. She walked slowly after class, trying not to rush home like everyone else. Margaret had already left, and the halls were almost empty. Her shoes echoed against the floor, making her feel like she was the last one alive in the building. The side door creaked when she pushed it open, and the cool air hit her face. She thought the place would be deserted. But he was there. James. Leaning against the fence at the far end of the lot, hands in his pockets, head tilted like he was listening to something only he could hear. Lisa froze. She told herself to go back inside, but her legs and curiosity didn’t listen. They carried her closer, one step, then another. “You planning on sneaking up on me?” His voice came low, calm, but it startled her. “I wasn’t sneaking,” she said quickly. James finally looked at her. His eyes held hers like they were testing her. “Then what are you doing?” Lisa swallowed. She felt stupid standing there, but the words forced their way out. “I have questions.” “Everyone does.” He pushed off the fence, his height suddenly more obvious. “Doesn’t mean I’ll answer.” She folded her arms, trying to look braver than she felt. “Why does everyone keep telling me to stay away from you?” the question gushed out from the lowest part of her abdomen with fear yet looking fearless. James smirked, but it wasn’t a happy one. “Because it’s good advice.” “That’s not an answer,” Lisa shot back. This time braver. He stepped closer, and she almost took a step back. Almost. His shadow grew long across the ground, brushing against her shoes. “Do you always push this much, Lisa Carter?” he asked, his voice softer now, curious. “Do you always dodge questions?” Lisa said authoritatively as if she'd s***k him if he didn't give her an answer. For a second, his mouth twitched, like he wanted to laugh. But then it was gone, replaced by that unreadable calm again. “Stay out of the woods. Stay away from me. You’ll sleep better if you do.” Lisa’s chest tightened. “But…..’ “No buts.” He didn’t let her finish. With quick steps, James walked past her, the faint smell of pine and earth clinging to him as he went. In seconds, he was gone, swallowed by the shadows like he belonged there. Lisa stood frozen, fists clenched. Every word he left behind dug into her like a hook. If he thought she was going to back down, he didn’t know her at all. That evening, Lisa went home alone, frightened. “Did I say something wrong?? “Should I have listened to my aunt Maureen?? “Oh my goodness…. I'm so dead!!” She taught on her way home. She's never been this brave in her life before. “He doesn't look harmless by the way” “I've started it and I'm definitely going to finish it.” As an over-thinker, she continued thinking on her way home, and she got late that day around 6pm, then she noticed something even weirder. Towards the woods, she saw footprints of a human being. It didn't look creepy so she traced it towards the woods. She was terrified but the eagerness in her wouldn't stop moving. As she got closer to the woods, she noticed that the footprints changed, like the owner of the footprints got bigger and shorter. She couldn't tell exactly what was going on, but she heard loud whispers and couldn't see anyone. Nobody told her to run. She ran as fast as her legs could carry her.
