Chapter Five

1046 Words
Once they had finished up with dinner, Evangeline headed up to her room so she could get ready for bed. Salem had already been taken care of and Drifter spent the evening inside. Everyone around the ranch loved Drifter and often helped take care of him, so it was no surprise if Evangeline went into her room to find him laying on her bed with his favorite chew toy. As she walked into her room, Drifter trotted over to her to say hello. "How's my little boy doing? Did you have a fun time running around the ranch today?" she said to him in her baby voice. Drifter jumped up on her leg for his usual pets. She pet him and then grabbed his ball and rolled it across the floor for him to play with. Evangeline collected everything she needed for a shower and headed off to do so. Once she was done her shower and headed back to her room, Evangeline laid down on her bed and cuddled up with Drifter. As she laid there with him, she slowly drifted off to sleep for a short nap. KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK. Evangeline woke up and staggered over to the door. She opened the door to find the ranch boss standing there. "Come on in Sir. Sorry I was just having a short nap." she said as she covered her mouth to yawn. "I talked to Philip and he mentioned his romantic interest in you. I wanted to come see how you're doing and to check in to see if there were any questions you had about my announcement tonight." he told her as he sat in the rocking chair in her room. "I don't have any questions, but I just want to make sure that all of this is ok with you and everyone else around here. I don't want anyone thinking I got this job because I'm in a relationship with the boss' son." she said as she dropped her head. "No worries there my girl. I should tell you, you're one of the only women Philip has dated where he's been this happy. Both of you seem to be more content since your relationship with each other has started. I want to make sure that both of you are taken care of." he said as he leaned forward putting his elbows on his knees with folded hands. "I have no complaints about anything Sir. I thank you for everything you've done since I've been here. I just hope that things go good for everyone here." she said with a worried look. "You have nothing to worry about. Now that you're in a relationship with my son, everyone around here is to treat you as my family. You are my family now until you say you don't want to be and even then I will still treat you as my own. You've had a rough life and I don't want to see you go through that again." he said he got up. "I appreciate that." she said with a smile. The ranch boss got up out of the chair and headed downstairs back to the dining room. Evangeline laid back down in her bed with Drifter by her side and fell asleep. Once the ranch boss got to the dining room he saw Philip sitting at the table. "How'd it go dad?" he asked with a concerned look on his face. "Son, that woman will take care of you. How long have you been chasing her?" he asked with a serious look on his face. "I've been watching her on and off for a month before she got here. I saw the things she went through dad and I just couldn't allow anything more to happen to her. After everything I've seen of her and how she works like this ranch is her own, I think I fell in love with her before I got the chance to speak to her." Philip admitted as he buried his head in his arms. "Son, how did you start watching her and why?" he asked with a curious tone in his voice. "I had first noticed her coming through town a month or so before she found the ranch job posting. She tried to find work with others in town but no one wanted to give her the chance. She didn't have much for work experience and was always moving. I knew she would do well out here and after the scars and bruising on her arms that you could see and other places, I knew there had to be something I could do. I put the ad where I knew she would see it in the hopes of her taking it and coming here. I had to make sure she was safe. What else was I supposed to do dad?" he said with a great amount of shame in his voice. "Son I told you years ago, if someone needs help, help them. That's exactly what you did. You helped this woman without her even knowing it. I'm proud of you son." His father reassured him. "Dad how do I tell her?" he asked. "Son this is one of those things that you gotta tell her right away." he told him. Philip thought about what his dad had said, and so he made the choice to write her a note explaining everything. Once the note was written he slipped it under her bedroom door and carried on to bed. Evangeline woke up in the morning and saw the note. She picked it up and read it then carried on with her day. What Philip didn't know is she knew everything he had wrote in that note. She knew someone was following her. She knew she didn't find the ad on a coincidence. She knew that someone was trying to help her in some way, she just never thought it would be Philip. As Evangeline carried on with her chores, she thought about everything leading up before her arrival at the ranch. The last thought that ever crossed her mind was a relationship happening in her future, let alone one with the ranch boss's son. The thought never crossed her mine but it quickly became her reality.
