ADAM
“It was a bullet wound, this was all the healer could do,” the healer said. “The doctor will finish up.”
I felt Charlie’s scowl burn holes in my face as I ran my plastered hand through my hair.
As soon as the healer was gone, he shut the door. “You can handle it? Well, look who almost got himself killed.”
“Who goes for an attack and doesn’t get injured?”
“Well, your captive. While you’re here bleeding like a fool, she’s completely unharmed.”
“Watch the way you speak to me, Charlie.” I glared up at him.
He opened his mouth to say something but swallowed the words into his fists. I could almost hear the sentence he wanted to say.
I’m your Alpha and you are my Beta.
He looked away and sighed. “What were you thinking going out alone? What’s our number one rule? We always move as a team, never alone.”
My gaze didn’t rip from him as I said, “Only cowards seek strength in people but themselves.”
A muscle ticked in his jaw. Something that sparked hope in me. Maybe I’d anger him enough for him to pick a fight and drop the act of being a docile Alpha.
“I’d rather die a coward than die trying to prove I’m something I’m not!” he hissed and stormed out of the room.
“He wasn’t wrong,” Jacob added to my anger.
“Shut your stupid mouth,” I growled. “The only reason I’m going through this is because you ran off to her.”
We had been taking down rogues with the rest of our men when the faint scent of the rogue leader hit our nostrils. Jacob went mad. I tried to transform but it was impossible to calm him.
He ran into her car, which had been a very dumb idea. Part of me was weirdly glad she hadn’t died. Even after that he’d tried jumping on her when she’d shot at us.
“Our mate is hot, Adam! I need to see her again,” Jacob whined.
“We do not have a mate, Jacob,” I told him for the umpteenth time.
I’d heard how most people found their mate; both wolves had reacted. They immediately professed love for each other, the bond had been so sure, so certain, nothing like what I’d felt a few hours earlier.
It had been brief. Just like those times I’d believed I’d found the one for me. Jacob might have feelings for her, but she only irked me.
No female had ever dared put a knife to my throat, much less shoot me. I recalled the time our eyes had locked; there was something about looking into her eyes.
Something that made me want to reconsider finding out the truth and keeping her under my captive for a very long time.
“Oh, that looks awful!” Tyla shrieked, standing outside my door and, without asking, stepping in and shutting the door behind her.
I sat upright. “Did I give you permission to enter my room?”
“The royal doctor was in labour today, so Charlie asked me to tend your bruise.”
Tyla had graduated from medical school two years after marrying Charlie. I’d seen her help during some attacks, so I trusted her a bit.
“I’d have to stitch the wound since the healer had done most of my job.” She grabbed my first-aid and sat beside me. “Sure you’re brave enough not to take analgesia?”
I leaned against the bed frame sluggishly. “Give it to me if you have to give it.”
She injected something into my hand. My whole body immediately relaxed.
“You shouldn’t have spared that rogue’s life, Adam,” she said unusually softly as she stitched me up. “You should have killed her immediately when she pointed a gun at you.”
I ignored her. Suddenly my being pulled again like earlier as the scent of cold spice wiped through my nose.
“Mate! Mate!! Take me to my mate,” Jacob cried.
I gripped the duvet. “Control yourself, Jacob.”
I tried shutting my eyes, hoping the thought of her would vanish, but the first thing I saw was her grey eyes, her nose and… lips barely an inch from mine as I pinned her hand above her head.
I shouldn’t have been thinking about a rogue that way!
My eyes snapped open when I felt Tyla’s hand snaking up my leg. My eyes met hers; they were filled with lust.
“Look how that rogue messed up your flawless leg…” I pushed my leg off her hands, cutting her off.
Without caring if my leg was still injured, I rose to my feet swiftly, glaring down at her. “What the hell were you trying to do?”
She stood. “Adam, Charlie is not here.”
She took a step closer and I took two back. I chuckled in utter confusion. “You must have lost it, haven’t you?”
“No, Addy. I… I know this is wrong but I want to feel you. Charlie and I barely make love for more than two minutes, and I’ve seen you with those females—oh, goddess, I want to experience what they have experienced.”
She stepped closer, eyes desperate. “You’ve always wanted to prove that you are better than your brother, do it now, Adam, do it. Take me.”
The moment her hand reached for my face, anger and irritation exploded within me. I gave her a warning finger.
“Get the hell out of my room now, Tyla. For heaven’s sake, you have two children!”
“I wouldn’t have them if I had the chance. I made a mistake being with Charlie. It wasn’t supposed to be me. You were meant for me, Adam and Charlie is supposed to be mated to that witch.”
My eyes twitched. “I don’t want to lay my hands on you, Tyla, but if you move any closer I will.”
Suddenly, her face morphed into a scowl, her body trembling. “This is the reason you’re cursed by the goddess! Can’t you see the world is unfair to you?”
“Your father loves your brother more; you are the firstborn yet your brother is the Alpha. You have no mate. The whole pack hates you and loves your brother, and now I, your rightful mate, am with your brother.”
“When your father returns next week, you’ll be a pawn he uses while he hails Charlie.
You have a chance now—make love to me and I’ll make sure I leave your brother and become yours.”
