The rain fell steadily over New York, covering the city in a silver curtain.
Inside the penthouse, Elena stood by the window, watching the storm.
She had been unusually quiet since returning from visiting Theo.
Something about the black SUV that followed her refused to leave her mind.
“Am I just imagining it?” she whispered.
A voice behind her interrupted her thoughts.
“Imagining what?”
She turned to find Adrian standing in the doorway, his suit damp from the rain.
“I didn’t hear you come in.”
“I’ve been calling your name.”
He noticed the worry on her face.
“Is everything alright?”
Elena forced a smile.
“Yes.”
But Adrian knew she wasn’t telling the truth.
The next morning, Adrian assigned Daniel to quietly investigate whether anyone had been following Elena.
“I don’t want to frighten her,” Adrian said.
“But I have a feeling something isn’t right.”
Daniel nodded.
“I’ll handle it personally.”
Meanwhile, William returned to the hospital for another examination.
Lucy waited anxiously outside the doctor’s office.
Several minutes later, the doctor smiled.
“The treatment is working better than we expected.”
Lucy covered her mouth.
“Really?”
William laughed softly.
“So I’m not leaving you anytime soon.”
Lucy hugged him tightly.
“You’d better not.”
For the first time in months, they left the hospital smiling.
Back at Smith Global Holdings, Adrian was preparing to leave when heavy rain began to pour outside.
He remembered Elena had gone shopping earlier.
Without thinking, he grabbed an umbrella and drove toward the market.
When he arrived, he saw her standing beneath a small shelter, waiting for the rain to stop.
She looked surprised.
“Mr… Adrian?”
He smiled.
“I thought you might need a ride.”
She laughed.
“You came all this way?”
“I was nearby.”
She knew he was lying.
His office was nearly forty minutes away.
But she didn’t expose him.
Instead, she quietly accepted the umbrella.
As they walked toward the car, a strong gust of wind pushed the umbrella sideways.
Both of them laughed.
For the first time…
Neither was thinking about work.
On the drive home, soft music played through the speakers.
Neither spoke for several minutes.
Finally, Adrian broke the silence.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
“What keeps you smiling after everything you’ve been through?”
Elena looked out the window.
“My parents taught me something before they died.”
“What?”
“They said…”
“No matter how dark today becomes…”
“Tomorrow always deserves another chance.”
Adrian smiled.
“I think they raised an incredible daughter.”
Elena’s cheeks turned pink.
“Thank you.”
That evening, they cooked dinner together.
Elena laughed as Adrian unsuccessfully tried to chop vegetables.
“I think being a CEO is easier for you.”
He looked at the uneven pieces on the cutting board and laughed.
“I’ll stick to business.”
She shook her head.
“You’re hopeless.”
“I know.”
For the first time…
The penthouse echoed with laughter.
Across town…
Daniel parked outside Theo’s apartment.
He watched carefully.
After nearly an hour…
The same black SUV appeared.
Daniel immediately became alert.
The vehicle remained parked for several minutes before driving away.
He quickly photographed the license plate.
Then he called Adrian.
“You were right.”
“What happened?”
“Someone is definitely watching Elena.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“I want to know who.”
“I’m already working on it.”
Late that night…
Elena couldn’t sleep.
She stepped onto the balcony.
A few moments later, Adrian joined her.
Neither spoke.
They simply admired the city lights together.
Finally…
Adrian turned toward her.
“Elena…”
She looked at him.
“I don’t know when it happened.”
“I don’t know how it happened.”
“But every day…”
“I find myself looking forward to coming home.”
Her heart began to race.
“You make this place feel alive.”
He stepped closer.
“I’ve spent years building companies.”
“But you’ve shown me how to build a home.”
Tears filled Elena’s eyes.
Before she could answer…
A phone rang inside the penthouse.
The moment was broken.
Adrian sighed.
“I should get that.”
He walked inside, unaware that Elena was smiling through her tears.
She gently touched her racing heart.
“I think…”
“I’m falling in love too.”
Neither of them knew
That someone had just photographed their almost-confession from the rooftop of a nearby building.
The mysterious man lowered his camera.
“So…”
“They’re finally in love.”
He smiled coldly.
“Perfect.”
“Now it’s time to tear them apart.”
