Autumn arrived in New York, painting the city in shades of gold and crimson.
Inside Smith Global Holdings, Adrian Smith stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office, reviewing the latest quarterly reports. Business had never been better. Investors were pleased, employees were motivated, and the company’s reputation continued to grow.
Yet despite all his success
His thoughts kept drifting to one person.
Elena.
A gentle knock interrupted his thoughts.
“Come in,” Adrian called.
Daniel stepped inside carrying a folder.
“Good morning, sir.”
“Morning, Daniel.”
“The board meeting starts in fifteen minutes.”
Adrian nodded.
“I’ll be there.”
Daniel hesitated before speaking again.
“May I ask you something?”
Adrian looked up.
“What is it?”
Daniel smiled.
“You’ve been smiling a lot lately.”
Adrian frowned.
“Have I?”
“Yes.”
Daniel laughed softly.
“I haven’t seen you this happy in years.”
Adrian shook his head.
“You must be imagining things.”
But as Daniel left the office…
Adrian couldn’t help smiling again.
Back at the penthouse, Elena spent the afternoon organizing Adrian’s study.
Books were carefully arranged.
Important documents were neatly stacked.
As she dusted one of the shelves, an old photo frame slipped into her hands.
It showed a much younger Adrian with William, Lucy, and Abraham.
All four of them were laughing.
Elena smiled.
“They look so happy.”
She carefully returned the photograph to its place.
Just then, the front door opened.
Adrian had come home earlier than expected.
“I thought you had meetings all day,” Elena said.
“I canceled the last one.”
“You did?”
Adrian loosened his tie.
“I needed a break.”
Elena noticed how tired he looked.
“Sit down.”
“I’ll make you some tea.”
A few minutes later, she returned with a steaming cup.
Adrian accepted it gratefully.
“Thank you.”
After a brief silence, he noticed the family photograph on his desk.
“You found that.”
Elena nodded.
“You were smiling.”
“We didn’t always have perfect lives,” Adrian said quietly.
“But we always had each other.”
Elena lowered her eyes.
“I envy that.”
Adrian looked at her.
“You’ve never talked much about your family.”
Elena hesitated.
“My parents died five years ago.”
“I’ve been raising my younger brother ever since.”
“I’m all he has.”
Her voice trembled.
Adrian felt a pang of sympathy.
“I’m sorry.”
She smiled sadly.
“Life doesn’t always go the way we plan.”
For a long moment…
Neither of them spoke.
Then Adrian quietly said,
“You’re stronger than you think.”
Elena looked into his eyes.
For the first time…
She believed him.
That weekend, William invited the entire family to the Smith mansion for dinner.
The atmosphere was warm and cheerful.
Abraham and Anna arrived first.
Soon after, Adrian walked in with Elena.
Lucy smiled brightly.
“You must be Elena.”
Elena nodded politely.
“It’s an honor to meet you.”
Lucy immediately took her hands.
“Thank you.”
Elena looked confused.
“For what?”
Lucy smiled warmly.
“For bringing laughter back into Adrian’s life.”
Adrian cleared his throat.
“Mother…”
Everyone laughed.
Even William couldn’t hide his smile.
Throughout dinner, Elena impressed everyone with her kindness and humility.
She listened more than she spoke.
She treated every servant with respect.
She even helped one of the elderly housekeepers carry dishes back to the kitchen.
William quietly watched everything.
Later that evening, he found Adrian standing alone on the terrace.
“You chose well.”
Adrian frowned.
“I didn’t choose anyone.”
William smiled knowingly.
“Not yet.”
He looked through the window at Elena laughing with Lucy and Anna.
“But your heart already has.”
Adrian remained silent.
Deep inside…
He knew his father was right.
Meanwhile, across the city, inside a dark office…
The mysterious man spread several photographs across his desk.
Every picture showed Adrian and Elena together.
He smiled coldly.
“So this is your weakness.”
He picked up his phone.
“I want everything about Elena Carter.”
“Where she lives.”
“Who she loves.”
“Who depends on her.”
“If Adrian Smith wants to protect her…”
“We’ll make sure he can’t.”
The man hung up and stared out at the city lights.
“The Smith family believes their greatest battle is over.”
He laughed quietly.
“They have no idea…”
“The real war is only beginning.”
The next morning, Elena left the penthouse early to buy groceries.
As she crossed the street, she noticed a black SUV parked nearby.
The engine was running.
The windows were tinted.
Someone inside appeared to be watching her.
She frowned.
Maybe she was imagining it.
She continued walking.
The SUV slowly followed.
Hidden behind the dark glass…
A pair of cold eyes never left her.
Someone had begun hunting Elena Carter… and neither she nor Adrian knew the danger was already closing in.
