Morning sunlight poured through the tall stained-glass windows of the council chamber, casting colorful patterns across the polished marble floor.
King Alistair sat at the head of the long oak table, his expression unreadable as the kingdom's most trusted advisers presented their reports.
"The harvest in the eastern province has exceeded expectations, Your Majesty," the Chancellor announced.
Alistair nodded.
"And the northern border?"
The Commander of the Royal Guard stepped forward.
"Our scouts report increased military activity from the Kingdom of Eryndor. Nothing threatening at the moment, but I believe we should remain cautious."
"Keep our soldiers prepared."
"Yes, Your Majesty."
Another adviser cleared his throat.
"There is also the matter of the royal succession."
The room fell unusually quiet.
Alistair rested his hands on the table.
"Continue."
"Princess Elara has reached an age where many kingdoms will begin seeking an alliance through marriage."
Several of the nobles exchanged glances.
"Duke Adrian Ashbourne has already expressed great admiration for the princess."
"The House of Wintermere has also shown interest."
"And Lord Ashford's family would gladly welcome such an alliance."
Alistair listened without interrupting.
Every proposal strengthened Valerion.
Every alliance meant greater peace.
Greater security.
A stronger future.
"We shall discuss the matter again," he finally said.
The council bowed.
"As you wish, Your Majesty."
The meeting ended shortly before noon.
Most of the advisers departed, leaving only Queen Evelyn standing beside one of the palace windows.
"You've been unusually quiet today," she observed.
Alistair removed the royal seal from a document before setting it aside.
"I have many things to consider."
"Or perhaps..."
She smiled gently.
"One person."
He looked at her.
"Elara."
A heavy silence settled between them.
"Our daughter is growing up," Evelyn continued.
"She deserves the chance to make her own choices."
Alistair's expression hardened.
"She is a princess."
"I know."
"Then you also know that her choices affect more than herself."
Evelyn walked closer.
"I only hope that when the time comes..."
"...you remember she is your daughter before she is your heir."
For the first time that day, uncertainty flickered across the king's face.
Only for a moment.
That evening, the royal family gathered for dinner.
The dining hall was quieter than usual.
Servants moved gracefully between the table, placing silver platters before the king, queen, and princess.
Elara smiled politely.
"The meal looks wonderful."
"I'm glad you could join us," Queen Evelyn replied warmly.
King Alistair looked toward his daughter.
"How have you spent your week?"
"I've been reading."
"And?"
"I visited Princess Nerina."
"The Ravenshire estate?"
"Yes."
Alistair nodded slowly.
"I've noticed you've taken quite an interest in House Ravenshire."
Elara's fingers tightened slightly around her fork.
"Nerina has been kind enough to invite me."
"I see."
His voice remained calm.
Too calm.
Queen Evelyn sensed the growing tension and quickly changed the subject.
"I heard the royal gardens are beginning to bloom."
"They're beautiful this year," Elara answered gratefully.
But Alistair wasn't finished.
"Duke Adrian spoke highly of you after your meeting in the city."
Elara looked up.
"We only spoke briefly."
"He seems like a respectable young man."
"He is."
"And?"
She hesitated.
"I don't know him well enough to have an opinion."
"You could."
Silence.
The Queen quietly lowered her gaze.
Alistair folded his hands.
"Many noble houses are interested in forming an alliance with Valencrest."
"I know."
"You also know what that means."
Elara placed her fork down.
"Father..."
"I don't wish to discuss marriage."
"You may not wish to."
"But someday you must."
She met his eyes.
"What if I don't want to marry for politics?"
The words hung heavily in the air.
Alistair answered without hesitation.
"You were born into the royal family."
"With that privilege comes responsibility."
"What if responsibility costs me my happiness?"
The king's expression softened...
Only slightly.
"You are not only my daughter, Elara."
His voice was firm but not unkind.
"You are the future Queen of Valerion."
"And one day..."
"You will have to choose the kingdom before yourself."
The dining hall fell silent.
Elara swallowed the lump forming in her throat.
She pushed back her chair.
"Excuse me."
Without waiting for permission, she left the room.
The sound of the closing doors echoed through the hall.
Queen Evelyn looked at her husband.
"You've frightened her."
"I've prepared her."
"There's a difference."
Alistair stared at the untouched meal before him.
Then slowly rose from his seat and walked toward the tall windows overlooking the palace grounds.
The kingdom stretched far beyond the castle walls.
Thousands of people depended on the crown.
On him.
Without turning around, he spoke quietly.
"If protecting this kingdom costs me my daughter's affection..."
He closed his eyes for a brief moment.
"...then it is a price I will pay."
Outside, the palace stood magnificent beneath the evening sky.
Inside...
The distance between a father and his daughter had grown just a little wider.
