Chapter 2: The Gilded Cage

1034 Words
The sun did not rise over the Sterling Estate; it merely turned the gray fog into a blinding, sterile white. Stella hadn't slept. She had spent the night counting the stitches in the silk duvet, listening to the house hum with a mechanical life of its own. At exactly 6:00 AM, the lock on her door clicked. Not a soft sound, but a sharp, metallic reminder that her autonomy was a thing of the past. A woman in a crisp, charcoal-colored uniform entered. She didn't offer a smile. "Ms. Vance. I am Martha, the head of staff. Your medical screening is scheduled for 7:00 AM. Your breakfast has been calibrated for optimal nutrient absorption. Please dress and report to the conservatory." "Calibrated?" Stella rubbed her eyes, her voice raspy. "I usually just have coffee." "Mr. Sterling does not allow caffeine during the term of the contract," Martha said, her tone as flat as the concrete floors. "It affects the cortisol levels. We cannot risk the viability of the transfer." The word *ltransfer made Stella’s stomach twist. She wasn't a person here; she was a laboratory. The Cold Examination The conservatory was a glass-walled wing of the house filled with exotic, sharp-leafed plants. In the center stood a mobile medical unit that looked terrifyingly out of place amidst the greenery. Two doctors in white coats waited. Kelly Sterling stood in the corner, his back to them, staring out at the rain. He didn't turn around when she entered. "Strip to the gown, Ms. Vance," one of the doctors said. Stella froze. She looked at Kelly’s broad back. "Can he... leave?" Kelly turned then. His eyes were hooded, dark circles under them suggesting he hadn't slept much more than she had. "I am the primary stakeholder in this venture, Stella. I don't leave my investments to chance." "I’m a human being, not a stock option," she snapped, her Tension boiling over. "For the next ninety-eight days, the distinction is irrelevant," Kelly replied. He stepped closer, his presence shrinking the massive room. "Do as the doctor says. Or should I call the hospital and tell them the 'Price of Mercy' was too high for you?" Stella’s breath hitched. The Shock of his coldness was a physical weight. Slowly, with trembling fingers, she unzipped the cream-colored dress he had provided and donned the thin medical gown. She felt exposed, not just physically, but spiritually. The exam was invasive and silent. They took blood. They measured her vitals. They performed an ultrasound of her empty womb. Throughout it all, Kelly watched. He didn't look with lust; he looked with a terrifying, proprietary focus. He was searching for any flaw that might derail his plan. The First Fracture When the doctors finally stepped away to consult their tablets, Stella sat on the edge of the exam table, clutching the thin fabric of her gown. "Why me, Kelly?" she whispered. "My father is gone. My family is ruined. Why go through this elaborate theater just to have a child with a Vance?" Kelly walked toward her. He didn't stop until he was standing between her knees, his height forcing her to look up. He reached out, his fingers tracing the line of her collarbone. His touch was electric, a sudden spark of Love, or perhaps just primal attraction, that shouldn't have been there. "Because," he murmured, his voice a low growl, "when this child grows up and looks in the mirror, they will see my face. But they will have your blood. And I will raise that child to hate everything you and your father stood for. It is the only way to truly kill a ghost, Stella. To rewrite the legacy." "You're a monster," she breathed. "I am a Sterling," he corrected. "We don't leave jobs half-finished." The Sudden Shock The lead doctor cleared his throat. "Mr. Sterling? A word." Kelly stepped away, the loss of his heat making Stella shiver. He joined the doctor by the monitors. Stella watched their reflections in the glass. The doctor pointed to a vial of Stella’s blood, then back at a digital chart. Kelly’s posture changed instantly. His shoulders tensed, and he let out a sharp, jagged breath. "Is there a problem?" Stella asked, her heart racing. Curiosity turned into dread. "Is the transfer canceled? Is my sister" Kelly turned. His face was a mask of fury. He marched over to Stella and grabbed her wrist, pulling her off the table. "What did you take?" he demanded. "What? Nothing! Just the vitamins your maid gave me!" "Don't lie to me!" Kelly roared, shaking her slightly. "The blood work just came back. You didn't tell us, Stella. You didn't mention the 'Unexpected Drama' you were already carrying." Stella’s head spun. "What are you talking about?" Kelly leaned in, his eyes burning with a mixture of betrayal and something darker. "The contract is for a surrogate. But you can't be a surrogate, Stella. Because according to these results... you’re already six weeks pregnant." The world went black at the edges. Shock. Stella hadn't been with anyone since the night of the "Vance Fall", the night she had sought comfort in the arms of a mysterious stranger at a masked bar to forget her father’s funeral. "That's impossible," she gasped. "Is it?" Kelly hissed. "Or was this your plan? To get into my house, carry another man’s bastard, and trick me into paying for it?" "I didn't know!" she cried out. Kelly’s grip tightened on her wrist. The Tension in the room was at a breaking point. Then, the doctor spoke up, his voice trembling. "Mr. Sterling... there’s more. We ran the DNA compatibility against the donor sample you provided for the surrogacy. The... the markers." Kelly looked at the doctor. "Speak." "The child she is carrying," the doctor whispered. "It’s not another man’s, sir. The DNA matches yours. She’s already carrying your heir." Silence fell over the conservatory. The "What If" had just become a reality neither of them could explain. Stella looked at Kelly, her eyes wide with horror. Kelly looked at Stella’s stomach as if it held a ticking bomb. The 99-day contract hadn't even started, and the rules had already been shattered.
