Chapter 7: The Blood Moon Intruder

1010 Words
The word nursery hung in the air like a death sentence. There was no nursery in the Sterling Estate: not yet. The fact that the intruders were heading for the empty, cold room Kelly had designated for the future "Asset" meant they knew the layout of the house better than Stella did. Kelly’s hand didn't tremble, but his eyes turned into chips of flint. He didn't head for the door; he headed for a bookshelf, pulling a leather-bound volume that triggered a silent mechanism. A wall panel slid back to reveal a security monitor and a rack of tactical gear. "Stay behind the desk," Kelly commanded, his voice a low, vibrating growl. "Don't make a sound. If the door opens and it isn't me, you use this." He handed her a heavy, cold object. Not a gun this time, but a high-voltage taser marked with the Sterling crest. "Kelly, wait" But he was already gone, moving into the hallway with the silent, predatory grace of a man who had spent as much time in shadows as he had in boardrooms. The Shadow in the East Wing Stella crouched behind the massive mahogany desk, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She watched the security monitors. The infrared cameras showed heat signatures moving through the East Wing, three figures, professional and fast. One signature stopped at the nursery door. The figure didn't kick it in. They used a bypass key. Curiosity overrode Stella’s fear. She leaned closer to the screen, adjusting the contrast. The intruder in the lead pulled off their tactical mask to wipe sweat from their forehead. Stella’s breath hitched. The Shock was so violent she nearly fell. The woman on the screen wasn't a mercenary. She was Julianna Sterling, Kelly’s "dead" mother. The Confrontation Stella couldn't stay behind the desk. If Kelly found his mother in that hallway, he wouldn't see a ghost; he would see a target. She bolted from the library, her bare feet silent on the cold marble. She ignored the pain in her side, the "Asset" inside her feeling like a heavy stone. She reached the East Wing just as Kelly was leveling his weapon at the lead intruder. "Drop it," Kelly hissed, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Whoever sent you made a mistake. You don't leave this house alive." "Is that any way to speak to the woman who gave you life, Kelly?" The voice was like a chime from a grave. Kelly froze. The Tension in the hallway became so thick it felt like the air had been sucked out of the room. The woman stepped into the light of the hallway sconces. She looked like an older, more elegant version of Kelly, the same piercing eyes, the same ruthless mouth. She was supposed to have died in a car accident in Switzerland ten years ago. "Mother?" Kelly’s voice broke, a sound of pure, unadulterated Shock. "I see you've been busy," Julianna said, her eyes sliding past her son to land on Stella. Her gaze was clinical, stripping Stella down to her very marrow. "And I see the Vance girl is as fertile as her mother was. A pity. I was hoping you’d find a more... dignified vessel." The Unexpected Drama Kelly lowered his gun, his hand shaking. "You died. I buried a casket. I spent ten years burning the Vance empire to the ground to avenge you!" "You buried a casket filled with lead and lies, Kelly," Julianna said, stepping forward and brushing a stray hair from his forehead. "I had to disappear. Your father was a weak man, and the Vances were going to take everything. I chose to survive so I could guide you from the shadows. But this?" She gestured to Stella’s stomach. "This 'Project Luna' has gone off the rails." Stella stepped forward, her hand clutching the taser. "You orchestrated the bankruptcy. Not Kelly’s father. You." Julianna smiled: a thin, cruel line. "The Vances were a cancer. I simply provided the surgery. But Kelly was supposed to use you for the trust accounts and then discard you, not... *impregnate* you. You've complicated the liquidation, Stella." "Liquidation?" Kelly asked, his voice returning to a dangerous edge. "What are you talking about?" "The 1994 Trust isn't for an heir, Kelly," Julianna said, her voice turning cold. "The trust is a failsafe. If a child is born of both bloodlines, the entire Sterling fortune is donated to the Vance Foundation. It was your father's final act of guilt. The only way for us to keep the money is for that child... to never be born." The Choice The room went silent. The Love Kelly might have felt for his mother was instantly incinerated by the Tension of the betrayal. Everything he had worked for every "What If" he had calculated was a lie fed to him by the woman he’d mourned. Julianna’s mercenaries moved closer, their hands on their holsters. "Step aside, Kelly," Julianna commanded. "We’ll take the girl to a private clinic. You can tell the world she had a miscarriage. We keep the empire. We keep the legacy." Kelly looked at Stella. He looked at the woman who had carried his child during a night of accidental passion. He looked at the "Asset" that was now a threat to his entire net worth. Stella backed away, her heart cold. "Kelly?" Kelly turned back to his mother. He didn't step aside. He raised his gun again, but this time, he pointed it directly at Julianna’s heart. "You said you disappeared to guide me," Kelly said, his voice as hard as a diamond. "But you forgot one thing. I’m a Sterling. And Sterlings don't give up what belongs to them." He reached back, grabbing Stella’s hand and pulling her behind him. "The contract just changed again, Mother," Kelly growled. "She isn't an asset anymore. She’s my wife. And if you want her, you’ll have to go through me." The Unexpected Drama had reached its peak. The "Billionaire" had just chosen a "Vance" over his own blood.
