Chapter 5 Emily couldn't stop thinking about what had happened the previous afternoon. Every time she closed her eyes, she remembered Alexander pulling her out of the bicycle's path. His grip had been firm but gentle. His voice had sounded... concerned. She shook her head. "Why am I even thinking about him?" Olivia looked up from her cereal. "Thinking about who?" Emily nearly dropped her spoon. "No one." Olivia smirked. "Alexander?" Emily's cheeks turned pink. "No!" "Your face says otherwise." Emily laughed and threw a napkin at her roommate. "Eat your breakfast." --- Meanwhile, across campus... Alexander sat alone on a bench outside the Business Building. His best friend, Ethan Brooks, walked over carrying two coffees. "I brought your usual." Alexander accepted the cup. "Thanks." Ethan sat beside him. "So..." Alexander sighed. "So?" "You've been spending a lot of time with Emily Carter." Alexander remained silent. "I've never seen you study with anyone before." "We're partners." "Only partners?" Alexander looked at his friend. "Yes." Ethan chuckled. "If you say so." Alexander ignored the comment, but for the first time in years, he found himself wondering why Emily kept appearing in his thoughts. --- Later that morning, Professor Williams divided the class into smaller groups for a practical laboratory session. "Today," she announced, "you'll be examining human cells under the microscope." Emily loved practical lessons. She carefully put on her lab coat and gloves. Alexander stood beside her, adjusting the microscope. "You've done this before?" he asked. Emily nodded. "In high school. I loved biology." He looked impressed. "You're good at it." Emily smiled. "Thank you." For the next hour, they worked side by side, discussing their observations and recording results. Professor Williams stopped at their station. She examined their work before smiling proudly. "Excellent." She looked around the classroom. "Everyone, if you'd like to see a perfect example of today's assignment, come and look at Emily and Alexander's results." Several students gathered around. Emily smiled shyly. Alexander simply stepped back, letting her explain their findings. Professor Williams noticed. "Very good teamwork." Sophia, standing across the room, watched with growing frustration. "They're getting closer every day," she muttered. --- Classes ended just after three o'clock. Emily packed her books. "I'm heading to the library," she told Olivia. "I'll meet you later." As Emily walked across campus, dark clouds gathered overhead. Within minutes, heavy rain began pouring. Students ran for cover. Emily searched through her bag. "Oh no..." She had forgotten her umbrella. She stood beneath the entrance of a building, hoping the rain would stop. "It doesn't look like it's letting up." A familiar voice spoke beside her. Alexander. He opened a large black umbrella. "You'll get sick standing here." Emily looked at him. "It's okay. I'll wait." "The weather forecast says the rain will continue for another hour." Emily sighed. "My dorm is on the other side of campus." Alexander held the umbrella slightly toward her. "Come on." She hesitated. "I don't want to inconvenience you." "You won't." After a moment, she stepped beneath the umbrella. They walked quietly together. The rain fell heavily around them, creating a peaceful rhythm. Neither of them spoke for several minutes. Finally, Emily broke the silence. "Thank you... for yesterday." Alexander glanced at her. "The bicycle?" She nodded. "You didn't have to help me." "I couldn't just stand there." Emily smiled softly. "I appreciate it." He looked away. "You're welcome." As they continued walking, Emily noticed an elderly woman struggling to carry several grocery bags through the rain. Without hesitation, she stepped away from the umbrella. "I'll be right back." Alexander watched as Emily hurried over. "Ma'am, let me help you." The elderly woman smiled gratefully. "Oh, thank you, dear." Emily carried the bags all the way to the woman's car before returning, completely soaked. Alexander stared at her. "You're drenched." Emily laughed. "She needed help." He shook his head, unable to hide a small smile. "You always put other people first." "My parents taught me that kindness costs nothing." For a moment, Alexander didn't answer. Then he quietly said, "I think your parents raised you well." Emily's smile grew warmer. "Thank you." From across the street, Sophia watched the entire scene from inside her car. Her face hardened. She wasn't just jealous anymore. She was determined. "If Emily Carter won't stay away from Alexander..." She clenched her jaw. "...I'll make sure she regrets ever coming to this university." The rain continued to fall, but neither Emily nor Alexander realized that a storm far more dangerous than the weather was slowly approaching.
