As Jada sat beside me, I could feel the weight of the room's attention on us. The air was thick with tension, and I struggled to keep my gaze fixed on Jada, avoiding the covetous stares of the men and the resentful glares of the women.
I took a glass a clinked it drawing the attention of everyone in the hall.
Everyone dropped their utensils down and looked up to hear what I was going to say.
"Everyone, I'd like you to meet Jada, she's my woman" I announced, my voice booming through the hall with a glint I warning in it. I squeezed Jada's hand, and she gave me a nod of acknowledgement. The room erupted into a chorus of congratulations and praise, with some of the men patting me on the back and the women offering Jada forced smiles and insincere welcomes.
