CHAPTER TWO: The Devil in the Shadows

The name lingered in Elena's mind long after she left the newsroom. Damien Blackwood. She had heard countless stories about him over the years. Some claimed he controlled every criminal organization in Blackridge. Others believed he was responsible for the disappearance of dozens of politicians who had crossed the wrong people. A few insisted he didn't even exist—that "Damien Blackwood" was simply a name used to frighten criminals into obedience. No photographs. No interviews. No official records. Only whispers. Yet the surveillance image in Marcus's folder proved one thing. He was real. And somehow... He was connected to the missing people. --- Rain drizzled steadily as Elena stepped out of the newsroom. The cool evening air should have eased her thoughts. Instead, it only made them heavier. She unlocked her car, tossed her backpack onto the passenger seat, and stared at the dashboard without starting the engine. Her phone buzzed. SOFIA "Pizza?" Elena smiled faintly. "Only if you're paying." A reply came instantly. "I always pay." "Exactly." Twenty minutes later, she parked outside Sofia's apartment. The door flew open before she could knock. "You look terrible," Sofia announced. "You always know how to make a girl feel special." "I mean emotionally." "You don't know that." "I've known you since college." Sofia folded her arms. "Something happened." Elena sighed. She handed her the folder Marcus had given her. Sofia carried it to the dining table and flipped through the photographs. Her playful smile disappeared. "These people..." "They're all missing." "No ransom?" "Nothing." Sofia frowned. "This isn't random." "I know." She stopped at Damien's photograph. "So..." "That's him." "The famous Damien Blackwood." Elena nodded. "What do you think?" "I think..." Sofia leaned closer. "...he has the kind of face that says he'll ruin your life." Elena laughed despite herself. "You're unbelievable." "I'm serious." "You've never even met him." "I don't need to." Sofia pointed at the picture. "Those eyes scream trouble." "They scream expensive suits." "They scream prison." Elena shook her head. "I need facts." "You need therapy." --- Meanwhile... Across the city... Blackwood Estate stood on a hill overlooking Blackridge like a fortress. Tall iron gates. Armed guards. Surveillance cameras covered every entrance. Inside the library, Damien Blackwood stood before the fireplace, quietly reading a report. He wore a tailored black suit without a wrinkle. Everything about him radiated discipline. A man entered the room. Nearly six-foot-four. Broad shoulders. A scar across his jaw. "Boss." Damien didn't look up. "Report." "The senator's scandal went public." "I know." "The reporter responsible escaped again." A brief silence. Then Damien finally lifted his eyes. "And?" The man placed a tablet on the desk. A paused video showed Elena sprinting across the steel maintenance beam between rooftops. Damien watched silently. The footage ended. His expression remained unreadable. "Interesting." "Should we deal with her?" Damien closed the file in front of him. "No." The man blinked. "No?" "Not yet." "But she's investigating the disappearances." "I know." "And if she gets close—" Damien interrupted calmly. "She already is." He walked toward the enormous windows overlooking the city. "What's her name?" "Elena Brooks." "Occupation." "Investigative journalist." "Family." "No living parents." "Friends." "One confirmed." "The hacker?" "Yes." Damien nodded once. "Keep watching her." "No contact?" "None." The bodyguard hesitated. "Boss..." "What?" "Someone else is already watching her." Damien slowly turned. "What did you say?" "Our surveillance team spotted unidentified vehicles near her apartment for the past three nights." His expression darkened. "They're not ours." Silence settled over the room. Damien spoke quietly. "Find out who." --- Back at Sofia's apartment... The smell of pizza filled the room. For a few precious minutes, life almost felt normal. Almost. Until Elena noticed something. The television. Breaking News. She grabbed the remote and increased the volume. The reporter stood outside an abandoned warehouse surrounded by flashing police lights. "We've just received confirmation that another body has been discovered on the east side of Blackridge." Elena froze. The camera shifted. A white sheet covered a body being wheeled into an ambulance. The caption underneath read: Harold Sinclair One of the names from Marcus's folder. Sofia whispered, "Oh no..." The news reporter continued. "Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of death." Elena was already standing. "I'm going." "No." "I'm going." "You just got here." "I have to see the crime scene." Sofia sighed. "You know the police will block you." "They always do." "And?" "I always find another way." Twenty-five minutes later... Blue and red lights illuminated the deserted industrial district. Police tape stretched across the entrance. Journalists crowded the sidewalk. Elena slipped beneath the tape before anyone noticed. "Hey!" Too late. She was already inside. Detective Noah Carter looked up and groaned. "I should've known." "You missed me." "I absolutely did not." He intercepted her before she reached the warehouse entrance. "What are you doing here?" "Working." "No." "Yes." "No." She smiled. "Noah." "Elena." "Let me in." "Not happening." She lowered her voice. "One minute." "No." "Thirty seconds." "No." "Ten?" He sighed. "You are impossible." "I've been told." Noah glanced around. The forensic team remained busy. Finally... "Five minutes." She grinned. "Knew you'd come around." "I hate myself." He lifted the police tape. "Stay close." Elena stepped into the warehouse. Immediately... Something felt wrong. There was almost no blood. No signs of struggle. The victim lay perfectly positioned on the cold concrete floor. As if someone had carefully placed him there. She crouched beside the body. Then noticed something tucked inside the victim's jacket pocket. A crimson envelope. With a black rose stamped across the front. Exactly like the one waiting on her kitchen table. Her heartbeat stopped. Elena's pulse hammered against her ribs. The crimson envelope rested inside Harold Sinclair's suit pocket, untouched by the forensic team. It was identical to the one sitting on her kitchen table—the same expensive paper, the same black rose embossed on the front. Someone wanted it to be found. Or worse... Someone wanted her to find it. She glanced over her shoulder. Noah was speaking with the lead forensic examiner a few meters away, his attention elsewhere. Carefully, she slipped on a pair of latex gloves from an abandoned evidence cart and pulled the envelope free. It felt strangely heavy. Inside was a folded sheet of paper. Her fingers trembled as she unfolded it. Seven names. The first two had already been crossed out in red. The third... Harold Sinclair. A fresh red line slashed through his name. Her eyes immediately moved to the fourth. Elena Brooks. A chill crawled down her spine. It wasn't just the same list. Whoever had written it had updated it. The killer wasn't predicting deaths anymore. They were keeping score. "Elena!" Noah's voice snapped her back to reality. She quickly slipped the paper back into the envelope just as he approached. "What are you doing?" "Looking." "You aren't supposed to touch evidence." "I was being careful." He frowned. "You've got that look." "What look?" "The one that says you've found something you're not telling me." She forced a smile. "You've known me too long." He held out his hand. "Give it to me." For a second, she considered refusing. Then she handed him the envelope. Noah removed the paper. His expression changed almost instantly. "What the..." He read the names twice. His jaw tightened. "Where did you find this?" "In his pocket." He looked at her. "Your name." "I know." "You've seen this before." She hesitated. Then nodded. "I found one in my apartment last night." His face drained of color. "You didn't tell me?" "I didn't know what it meant." "And now?" She swallowed. "I think someone is hunting everyone on that list." Noah folded the paper carefully. "You're coming with me." "I'm fine." "That wasn't a suggestion." --- An hour later... Police Headquarters. Noah sat across from Elena in a quiet interview room. A cup of untouched coffee sat between them. "When exactly did you receive the envelope?" "Last night." "How did it get into your apartment?" "I don't know." "No signs of forced entry?" She shook her head. "No." He scribbled notes. "Did anyone see it?" "No." "What about your friend?" "Sofia." "Did she?" "I showed her the missing persons file." "But not the envelope." "No." He leaned back in his chair. "This changes everything." "Meaning?" "Meaning whoever is behind this already knows who you are." Elena crossed her arms. "I've had threats before." "Not like this." He slid the list across the table. "Three names crossed out." "Three victims." "And yours is next." The room fell silent. For the first time in years... Elena felt something unfamiliar. Fear. Not for herself. But for everyone around her. --- Across the city... Blackwood Estate. Damien stood inside his private office, staring at the city lights beyond the massive windows. His trusted bodyguard, Victor, entered carrying a tablet. "The third target is dead." "I know." Victor hesitated. "The police found the list." Damien remained silent. "So did the journalist." Finally... Damien turned. "Show me." Victor played footage taken from a hidden camera overlooking the warehouse. It showed Elena kneeling beside Harold Sinclair's body. Then finding the envelope. She wasn't supposed to. Damien's expression darkened. "Who leaked the location?" "We're still investigating." "And the list?" "No fingerprints." "No DNA." "Nothing." Damien closed his eyes briefly. "They're accelerating." Victor frowned. "What does that mean?" "It means they know we're getting close." A second man entered the office. "You asked to see me, Boss?" Damien nodded. "I want twenty-four-hour surveillance on Elena Brooks." "Protection?" "No." The man looked confused. "Observation." "What if she's attacked?" Damien's gaze turned icy. "Then you stop it." "So... protection." "I didn't say that." Victor couldn't suppress a faint smile. Damien noticed. "What?" "Nothing." "Speak." "It's just..." Victor cleared his throat. "You've never ordered surveillance on a civilian before." "This isn't about her." Victor remained unconvinced. --- Near midnight... Elena finally returned home. The hallway outside her apartment was unusually quiet. She unlocked the door. Everything looked normal. Too normal. She entered cautiously. The living room. Empty. Kitchen. Empty. Bedroom... Her heart nearly stopped. Someone had been inside. Every drawer had been opened. Books lay scattered across the floor. Her laptop was gone. Camera memory cards... Gone. Hard drives... Gone. Nothing valuable had been stolen. Only her investigation. "They're cleaning up," she whispered. Then she heard it. A faint creak. From her balcony. Someone was still there. She reached for the heavy metal lamp beside the couch. Slowly... Silently... She stepped toward the curtains. One step. Another. She tightened her grip. Then, in one swift movement, she pulled the curtain aside and swung the lamp. The figure caught it effortlessly. Her eyes widened. He was tall. Dressed entirely in black. Leather gloves. No mask. Just a pair of piercing gray eyes that seemed to see straight through her. Before she could scream, he spoke in a calm, steady voice. "You should learn to aim higher." She froze. It was the same voice. The one from the phone. "Run." Her grip tightened around the lamp. "Who are you?" Instead of answering, he looked toward the apartment door. Footsteps. Several of them. Heavy. Fast. His expression changed instantly. "They found you." "What?" The front door exploded inward with a deafening crash. Masked gunmen flooded into the apartment. The stranger grabbed Elena's wrist. "If you want to live..." His gray eyes locked onto hers. "...come with me."
