The silver thread wrapped around my wrist.
Before I could pull away, an invisible force yanked me forward.
"No!" Noah shouted.
Damon lunged first.
His fingers brushed my arm—
Boom!
A blast of silver energy threw him backward.
"Damon!" Ryker roared.
The other Alphas rushed toward me, but every step they took was met with another wave of power.
The glowing thread refused to let anyone interfere.
I slid across the cracked floor until I was only inches away from Kael.
His crimson eyes softened.
"Easy," he murmured.
"I won't hurt you."
"I don't even know you!" I cried, trying to pull free.
"You will."
His voice held a strange sadness.
"You knew me once."
Before I could ask what he meant, the crescent mark on my wrist burned.
Pain shot through my body.
Images flashed before my eyes.
A little girl running through a moonlit garden...
A young boy with crimson eyes laughing beside her...
A silver pendant split into two halves...
Then...
Blood.
Fire.
Screams.
A woman shoved me into someone's arms.
"Take the princess!"
"Protect her!"
The vision shattered.
I gasped, stumbling backward.
"What... was that?"
Kael stared at me, his jaw tightening.
"So your memories are beginning to return."
"No..."
I clutched my head.
"I've never seen those people before."
"You have."
"You were just too young to remember."
Noah stepped between us again.
"That's enough."
His voice shook with fury.
"I don't care what tricks you're using."
"Stay away from my sister."
Kael's eyes finally left me.
"They murdered her parents."
The room froze.
Noah frowned.
"What?"
"They hunted the Moon Queen's bloodline."
"They failed to kill her."
"So they erased her past instead."
Elder Gideon slowly lowered his head.
"...He's telling the truth."
Everyone looked at the old elder.
"You knew?" Noah asked, disbelief filling his voice.
"I knew part of it," Gideon admitted.
"But I never knew the Lycan heir survived."
"Heir?" Lucian repeated.
Kael removed a silver pendant from beneath his shirt.
Half of a crescent moon hung from the chain.
Something around my neck suddenly grew warm.
Confused, I reached beneath my blouse.
There...
Hidden against my skin...
Was another pendant.
The missing half.
As soon as I pulled it out, both pendants began glowing.
They floated into the air.
Click.
The two broken halves joined together.
A brilliant silver light filled the hall.
Everyone shielded their eyes.
When the light faded, the restored pendant hovered between Kael and me.
Etched across its surface were ancient words.
"Until the Moon rises again..."
"...the Guardian shall never abandon his Queen."
Elder Gideon dropped to one knee.
"The Sacred Guardian's Oath..."
"It's real."
Ryker stared at Kael.
"So you're not her mate?"
Kael shook his head.
"No."
"I am her sworn protector."
The five Alpha Kings exchanged stunned glances.
For the first time since arriving, none of them looked at Kael as a rival.
Instead...
They looked at him as another piece of a mystery none of them understood.
Suddenly—
A deafening explosion shook the pack house.
The windows shattered.
Smoke poured into the council hall.
A terrified guard stumbled through the broken doorway.
"Alpha Noah!"
"The rogues have reached the main square!"
"They're slaughtering anyone who stands in their way!"
Another explosion echoed outside.
Then came the terrified screams of women and children.
Kael's expression turned ice cold.
"They're here."
Damon looked toward the smoke.
"Who?"
Kael slowly drew the black sword strapped across his back.
Its silver blade gleamed with ancient runes.
"The ones who murdered her family..."
"They've finally come to finish the job."
Just then, a chilling voice echoed from outside the council hall.
"Hand over the Moon Queen..."
"...or we'll burn this entire pack to the ground."
