Blood, dark sand, screams, and the burning sun. There was no way out of this. We were completely surrounded and taken off guard. Declaran had brought more men than we could have ever predicted, and he was merciless. Even though he stood back on a small sand hill, watching the fight from his horse while his men took us out one by one, I was still standing, trying to fight off multiple attackers while keeping Cole safe.
“Look out!”
I pulled Cole around just as a man came running with an axe raised to strike. I blocked his attack and cut him down before turning to Cole again. He meant it when he said he would not kill. He only blocked the men who came to try to kill us. I was surprised by his skills, but this could not go on. He had to kill in order to survive.
