40 Kerina The walk is dusty and boring and there is little to look at along the way. Rubble buildings are scattered about, long since abandoned. They leave a reminder of the once dense population that lived between Nevertyre and Middtown. All long dead from the Burn and its aftermath. Trees stand straight and tall in parts, adding a contrast to the texture of the land. Spinifex grass has grown wild across the vast landscape. The only sound as we walk along is the scuff of our footsteps as we try to keep a steady pace. Conversation is limited and we keep the rations strict, sipping water sparingly should our travel calculations be wrong. ‘How much more, yer think?’ asks Elgee. ‘Two more days,’ says Lariel. ‘Are you sure we’re headed da right way?’ ‘Of course, I’m sure,’ she snaps. ‘
