69 Saxon The underground space is crushing me, I can barely breathe. The walls shrink inward and I can’t get enough air into my lungs. I push past anyone in the way. ‘Watch it,’ they shout after me. I take no notice of them as I stomp along the passageway. After a while I find myself at the base of the ladder. I know the narrow opening above will lead me outside and that’s exactly where I need to be, outside and alone. I lift one foot after the other and make my way up the rungs. I heave and puff my way to the top. By the time I burst through the opening, I can contain myself no longer. I roar to the open, empty landscape.
