The first day is uneventful and long. We drive until nightfall. It’s agreed that we will take shifts keeping watch. There’s enough of us to take it in turns for an hour before getting some sleep. Then at the first break of daylight we can continue, charging the car as we go.
Vera takes the first shift. The rest of us split up the thermal blankets to share and get some rest.
‘Yer not really me type, but you’ll do,’ says Elgee, lying down next to me.
I elbow him in the ribs. ‘If you spoon me, you’re a dead tinker.’
