‘Good morning, Kerina. How did you sleep?’
Constance tugs the curtains all the way open. Sunlight streams in, brightening the room.
I shield my eyes from the morning glare.
‘I slept some. It just wasn’t very restful.’
Constance smiles. ‘Keep trying. It’s going to get better.’
I want to believe Constance but am unsure of the truth to her words. I sit up, and for the first time my body doesn’t creak from the effort. In fact, I feel stronger than I have before. The memories with Janoah, while worrisome, have me wanting to learn more. I pick at the invisible lint on the purple bedspread.
‘Was there a problem this morning?’ I ask, changing the subject.
Constance pauses. ‘You heard us arguing?’
‘Just voices. I couldn’t make out what you were saying.’
