Darrion’s POV
I woke up to the start of yet another stressful semester with students. After showering, I came out to find my younger twin, Dexter, still fast asleep on the bed. A wicked idea popped into my head, and I smiled.
I dashed to the door and screamed,
“MATE—!”
Just as expected, within a split second Dexter was already at the door, wearing his usual playboy grin, ready to welcome our “mate.”
I backed away as he approached, and when he realized what had happened, he turned to face me—livid. He rushed me with his vampiric speed, and the next thing I knew, we were both on the floor.
“Asshole,” he muttered as he stood up.
“Doofus,” I shot back.
He sat on the couch, suddenly serious and worried.
“It’s fine,” I said calmly. “We’ll find her. You don’t have to worry.”
“When?” he snapped. “When?”
“I just want to find her,” he continued, staring at his arms as if imagining her there, “hold her close, breathe in her intoxicating scent, and never let her go.”
“Me too, bro. Me too,” I admitted.
“But it’s Monday morning, and we’ve got work to do,” I added. “So get your lazy ass up and get to the shower.”
He stood up, shaking off his despair, looking both funny and cute as he headed toward the bathroom.
An hour later, I was fully dressed, bags packed, and ready to go. Dexter walked into the living room looking prepared to face the world, but his face fell the moment he saw my bags.
“You said you weren’t returning to the dorm today,” he said quietly.
“Plans changed,” I replied, buckling my shoes. When I looked up and saw his expression, I softened.
“Don’t look so sad,” I said, pulling him into a bear hug. “I’ll be back every weekend. I promise.”
He smiled at that.
“You’ll bake those brownies of yours every time you come back, right?”
“Promise,” I said, grinning.
Despite being twenty-five in human years and over five hundred years old as vampires, we still acted like six-year-olds around each other. And honestly? I loved it.
We headed to the parking lot, got into the McLaren, and zoomed off.
An hour later, we arrived at the university. Dexter helped me move my things into the dorm, then left. Barely five minutes passed before my phone rang.
“She’s there!” he squealed like a kid who’d just been asked to prom.
“She—she’s there!”
I frowned at first, then my heart nearly stopped.
“Bro, please tell me this isn’t a joke,” I said. “I know I pranked you, but don’t do this to me.”
“It’s not a prank, i***t!” he yelled. “She’s really there—at your damn school!”
“Okay, okay… calm and collected,” I muttered—before completely losing it and squealing too.
“What does she smell like?” I asked quickly.
“Not telling.”
“Don’t be a doofus.”
“Nope.”
The call ended with a long beep. I was annoyed, but seconds later I was jumping on the bed like a five-year-old, laughing and shouting.
“She’s here! She’s here!”
I quickly changed into something more corporate and rushed to class—I only had a few minutes left.
Later
“Who can give me different strategies to increase sales—say, for a cosmetics company?”
I scanned the hundred blank faces staring back at me and realized none of them had done their holiday assignment. I was about to go off on them when the door opened.
“Good morning, Mr. Harrison,” the dean, Mrs. Avery, greeted.
“Good morning, Mrs. Avery,” I replied.
Then I smelled her.
Vanilla orchid.
My eyes landed on the girl beside the dean, and everything in me stilled. She was breathtaking—bold eyes, an innocent face, and curves clearly outlined by her fitted blue jeans.
My mate.
I forced myself to look away and continue the lesson to avoid drawing attention.
“So, some strategies include—”
No one was paying attention. I followed their gaze back to the door and found her still standing there, looking lost. I gently nudged her with the marker.
“Take a seat,” I said, keeping my tone professional.
“Oh—sorry, sir,” she replied, her voice sending a jolt straight through me.
She walked down the aisle and sat beside a girl who had been waving at her earlier.
I turned back to the board, doing everything in my power to control myself—because the last thing I needed was to kiss and mark my mate in front of an entire class.
