Chapter Seven: Claimed by the Crown

1038 Words
The acolyte's weeping voice hung over the shattered amphitheater like an executioner's axe. The silence that followed was heavy, suffocating, and absolute. "Treason!" The senior judge's roar shattered the stillness, his weathered face twisted into a mask of pure terror as he pointed at Aria. "She has corrupted the sacred texts. She is an existential threat to the bloodline. Your Majesty, the High Seat demands her immediate execution before the dawn can spread this rot any further." A chorus of furious, bloodthirsty agreements erupted from the upper tiers. Dozens of Lycan lords rose to their feet, their eyes burning gold, their fingers extending into razor sharp claws. The physical weight of their collective alpha pressure descended upon the center floor like a falling roof, designed to crush a common wolf to her knees. Aria braced her spine, her jaw clenching as she fought the crushing aura. They want me to beg, she thought, fierce and burning. They want me to cower like I did in Caleb's attic. But I am not the ghost they think I am. She had spent nineteen years learning how to fold herself smaller so a room full of angry men would forget she existed. She would not do it here, not in front of strangers who had already decided what she was before she'd said a single word in her own defense. "The High Council does not dictate the execution of a crown asset," Torin's baritone cut through the oppressive pressure, effortlessly neutralizing the lords' combined aura. He stepped directly over the fractured royal crest, his massive frame completely shielding Aria from the high tiers. "She is not an asset, Torin. She is a death sentence," the judge screamed back, his brittle hands gripping the marble railing. "You would risk the entire empire for a nameless anomaly?" Torin didn't flinch. He slowly raised his left hand, the scorched, trembling palm exposed to the room. "By the right of the First Sovereign, under the Lex Regia of the ancient compact, I claim this female under the absolute protection of the Crown. She will be held in the high royal quarters under my personal vigilance. Any blade drawn against her is a declaration of war against my throne." The chamber erupted into a frenzy of outrage. Nobles slammed their fists against the stone benches, shouting accusations of madness, of corruption, of a king already falling victim to the prophecy. But none of them dared to step down the stairs. The golden royal light hummed aggressively around Torin's shoulders, a promise of total annihilation for anyone who crossed the threshold. "Move her," Torin commanded his knights, never breaking eye contact with the furious council. The Royal Knights closed ranks, guiding Aria out of the screaming amphitheater through a private rear corridor. She was marched through a labyrinth of heavily reinforced obsidian hallways, climbing upward into the highest tier of the palace where the royal family resided. She had heard the word claim before, from Caleb, from the guards who talked about her like livestock in the dark of the packhouse. Coming from Torin it should have meant the same thing. It didn't feel the same. It felt like the first time in her life someone had put their name on her not to own her, but to stand between her and a blade. She didn't know what to do with that, so she said nothing at all. They brought her into a massive, vaulted chamber lined with heavy tapestries and reinforced by rows of glowing blue runes carved into the stone lintels. These were the high wards of the crown, designed to contain the most volatile supernatural forces in the realm. But the moment Aria crossed the threshold, the glowing blue lines dimmed significantly. The humming energy in the air faltered, losing its sharp bite as if the very magic were holding its breath around her. The knights noticed it, their faces pale beneath their visors as they quickly retreated and locked the heavy oak doors from the outside. Aria stood alone in the center of the vast, luxurious room. She let the heavy fur cloak slide from her shoulders, exposing the raw, silver burned skin of her neck. She paced to the high arched window, looking out over the capital city. The eastern district was completely dark, a silent testament to the vanished scents of thousands of wolves. The heavy iron lock clicked. Aria turned as Torin stepped into the room alone. He had stripped off his splattered chest piece, wearing only a dark tunic that highlighted the massive, rigid lines of his shoulders. His left hand was wrapped in clean white linen, the dark burn seeping through the fabric. He locked the door behind him and stopped, keeping a deliberate five feet of distance between them. He didn't look like a king preparing an interrogation. He looked like a man who had watched his entire reality fracture in the span of a single night. "The wards are dying because you are in the room," Torin said, his voice quiet, devoid of the theatrical dominance he had used in the council chamber. "My family has used those seals for three hundred years to contain rogue alphas. Why do they fear you, Aria?" Aria let out a dry, breathy laugh, leaning back against the stone window frame. "You think I have a manual? I spent my entire life starving in a dark attic because my own pack thought I was a useless defect. I don't know why your shadows freeze. I don't know why your council is bleeding from their noses." "You claimed me back there," she added, quieter. "In front of all of them. Why." Torin was silent for a moment, his jaw working like the answer cost him something. "Because the alternative was watching them tear you apart on the floor of my own chamber, and I found that I could not stand there and allow it. I am still deciding what that means." It was the most honest thing anyone had said to her since she'd been dragged out of the dungeon, and it landed harder than any declaration of protection had. She didn't trust it yet. But she let herself hear it.
