Chapter 24
Changes
On the night of September 4, Bea couldn't sleep. She awakened Arty several times to ask him if everything was okay. She knew something was wrong with someone she loved. After Arty fell asleep once again, Bea lay back down on the pillow. While staring into the darkness, her body became rigid. Bea suddenly knew it was her sister who was somehow calling out to her. She looked at the clock. It was 4:00 AM.
Filled with panic, Bea lay in bed, all senses alert as she listened for the telephone to ring. When Jim finally called Bea at 6:00AM, she answered with, “How bad is she?”
Bea and Arty immediately drove to Endicott where they would spend a large portion of the next two and a half years. Jim set up a small bedroom area in the cellar for Bea. Arty, who still had his mail
