The Selective Training and Service Act of 1940 enacted the first peacetime draft in U.S. History. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, “Uncle Sam” actively began to induct into military service what would eventually be ten million men, however, many did not wait for the draft. As a wave of patriotism swept the country, countless men and women immediately signed up to serve their country. Arty was one of them.
