Sakina We left at the crack of dawn, passing multiple patrols on the way. I had asked him if he had wanted to take a patrol into the caves with us, but he shook his head. “Whatever’s in there, I don’t need a patrol to fight it for me,” he murmured. We rode hard for two hours, stopping to eat the food that I had packed for us the night before. “Cassia and I will be sleeping at the palace tonight. So don’t be expecting food waiting for you,” she’d said. They did that from time to time, splitting their time between the two homes. Although I knew they did it because the bathing pools in the palace were enormous and they both enjoyed a swim from time to time. “This is delicious,” Lucien groaned, biting down on the kebab wrapped in bread. “Tell Malaka I love her.” My ears burned.
