The Lines We Cross(Chapter 2)

Naomi stood frozen between them, her pulse hammering in her ears. Jordan’s fingers lingered over hers, a ghost of a touch that once meant everything. Adrian’s hand rested at the small of her back, his presence commanding and unwavering. The tension between the three of them was suffocating, thick with unspoken words and undeniable emotions. She swallowed hard, looking between them. The past and the present. The heartbreak and the possibility. “I—” she started, but the words caught in her throat. Adrian didn’t wait. “Naomi,” he said, his voice smooth, firm. “Our table is waiting.” Jordan’s jaw clenched. “So that’s it?” His dark eyes bore into hers. “You’re just going to leave?” Naomi exhaled slowly, a battle waging inside her. “I didn’t say that.” Jordan scoffed, shaking his head. “You don’t have to.” Adrian didn’t spare him a glance. “She doesn’t owe you an explanation, Carter.” Jordan let out a bitter laugh. “Right. Because that’s what you do, isn’t it? Sweep in, take what you want, and leave the rest behind.” Naomi flinched. This wasn’t what she wanted. This wasn’t her. “Stop,” she said, her voice low but firm. “Both of you.” Jordan’s expression softened, but Adrian remained unreadable, the tension in his jaw barely concealed. “I just need time,” Naomi said. “I need to think.” Jordan exhaled sharply, shaking his head. “I’ve given you time, Naomi. I’ve waited. But if you walk away now, I won’t be here when you figure it out.” Her heart squeezed painfully. Adrian’s grip on her waist tightened, but his voice remained calm. “She doesn’t owe you anything, Carter.” “No,” Jordan agreed. “But she owes it to herself to make a decision before it’s too late.” With that, he turned and walked away, leaving Naomi standing in the middle of a battlefield she never wanted to be part of. Adrian’s voice was low, deliberate. “Are you coming with me?” Naomi hesitated, glancing back at the door where Jordan had just left. And then she made her choice. --- The restaurant Adrian had reserved was stunning—private, elegant, and overlooking the city skyline. The kind of place meant for moments that mattered. Naomi, however, felt anything but at ease. As they were seated, she noticed the subtle way Adrian observed her—calm, unreadable, like he was trying to solve a puzzle he wasn’t sure he wanted the answer to. “I take it that wasn’t planned?” he said, his tone casual but laced with something else. Naomi sighed, rubbing her temples. “No, it wasn’t.” “You looked like you were considering going after him.” She hesitated. “Would that have bothered you?” Adrian leaned back in his chair, studying her. “I don’t share, Naomi.” Her stomach twisted. “Neither does he.” A flicker of amusement passed over Adrian’s face. “Yet, here you are.” Naomi exhaled, setting down her menu. “I didn’t plan for this.” Adrian tilted his head. “Did you ever love him?” The question felt like a sharp blade against an old wound. She didn’t answer right away, her fingers tracing the rim of her glass. “Yes,” she admitted finally. “Once.” “And now?” She met his gaze. “I don’t know.” Adrian nodded, his expression unreadable. “Then figure it out.” She blinked, caught off guard. “You’re not angry?” “I’m not a fool, Naomi. I know I’m not the only man in your life. But I don’t beg. I don’t wait. And I don’t compete.” He leaned in slightly, his voice dropping. “If you choose him, then that’s your choice. But if you choose me…” He paused, his gaze locking onto hers. “Then I expect all of you.” A shiver ran down her spine. Naomi swallowed. “And if I don’t choose at all?” Adrian’s expression darkened slightly. “Then you’ve already made your decision.” The words hung in the air between them, heavy with meaning. She wanted to say something, to deny it, to protest. But deep down, she knew he was right. She had to decide. But how do you choose between the past and the future when both are pulling you apart? As the city lights twinkled beyond the glass, Naomi realized one thing—no matter what she decided, someone was going to get hurt. And she wasn’t sure she was ready for that. --- Later that night, Naomi sat on the edge of her bed, staring at her phone. Two unread messages. Jordan: I meant what I said. I won’t wait forever. Adrian: Think carefully, Naomi. I won’t fight for a woman who isn’t sure she wants me. She groaned, tossing her phone aside and burying her face in her hands. This was a mess. A knock on the door startled her. She glanced at the time—who would be visiting this late? With cautious steps, she opened the door. Jordan stood there, hands in his pockets, his face unreadable. “Can we talk?” Naomi’s heart pounded. “Jordan—” “I just need five minutes.” She hesitated before stepping aside. He walked in, his presence filling the room like it always did. But there was a weight in his eyes, something she wasn’t sure she was ready to face. “I meant what I said,” Jordan murmured, turning to face her. “I’ve changed, Naomi. I know I messed up before, but I swear to you, I won’t do it again.” Her throat tightened. “Jordan, this isn’t just about you changing. It’s about me. About what I want.” “Then tell me what you want,” he challenged. She opened her mouth, but no words came. Because the truth was, she didn’t know. Or maybe… she just didn’t want to admit it.
