A Love That Was Never Enough (Chapter 5)

841 Words
Naomi stood in front of the large window in her apartment, her arms crossed tightly over her chest as she gazed at the dark city skyline. Her mind was a mess, tangled between past and present, between Jordan and Adrian. She hated that Jordan still had the power to get under her skin, to make her feel guilty when he was the one who had shattered her. And Adrian… Adrian was the one who made her feel whole again. Yet, there was still a lingering fear in her chest. What if she wasn’t ready to choose? What if she had already chosen, and she just couldn’t admit it? The sound of her phone buzzing snapped her out of her thoughts. She turned, expecting it to be Adrian or maybe even Jordan trying to get the last word. But when she saw the name on the screen, her heart stopped. It was a name she hadn’t seen in months. Maya. Her best friend. The one person who had been there for her through everything—until she wasn’t. A lump formed in Naomi’s throat. She hesitated before answering. “Hello?” “Naomi.” Maya’s voice was urgent, breathless. “I need to see you.” Naomi frowned. “What’s going on?” “It’s about Jordan.” That was all it took for dread to creep in. --- Flashback: The Beginning of the End Before Jordan betrayed her, before everything fell apart, Naomi used to believe that love was enough. She had fought for their relationship. Given it everything. She used to wake up next to him, tangled in sheets, believing he was the man she would marry. They had dreams—plans. A future. But love wasn’t always enough. She should have known when he started coming home late. When he became distant, always checking his phone, always making excuses. She had ignored the warning signs because she wanted to believe that their love was stronger than his secrets. And then she caught him. Naomi could still see his face when she walked into his office that night. The way he wasn’t even surprised. The way he had let her walk away. She spent so long asking herself—why wasn’t she enough? But now, months later, she had stopped asking. Because she had finally realized… Jordan was the one who was never enough. --- The Confrontation Naomi walked into the café, spotting Maya immediately. Her best friend looked tense, her fingers wrapped around a cup of coffee that had probably gone cold. Naomi slid into the seat across from her. “What’s going on?” Maya exhaled, setting the cup down. “Jordan’s in trouble.” Naomi froze. “What kind of trouble?” Maya hesitated, biting her lip. “It’s… bad. His law firm is under investigation. Something about embezzlement.” Naomi blinked. “Are you serious?” Maya nodded. “He could lose everything.” A bitter laugh escaped Naomi’s lips. “And why exactly are you telling me this? You think I should feel sorry for him?” Maya hesitated. “I just thought you’d want to know.” Naomi clenched her jaw, leaning forward. “Let me make something clear, Maya. Jordan made his choices. He hurt me. He betrayed me. And now, he’s paying the price.” Maya sighed. “I know. I just… I saw him yesterday. He looked like a mess, Naomi. He asked about you.” Her heart stumbled. She didn’t want to care. She didn’t care. But a part of her—the part that once loved him—still felt a flicker of something. Not love. Not longing. Just the ghost of what once was. “Naomi…” Maya’s voice softened. “Have you moved on?” Naomi looked away. “I don’t know.” But that was a lie. She had moved on. She just wasn’t sure if her heart had caught up to the truth yet. --- Present Day: The Choice She Never Wanted to Make Later that night, Naomi found herself standing outside Adrian’s penthouse, her fingers trembling as she knocked on the door. It swung open, revealing him—tall, confident, but with something softer in his eyes when he saw her. “Naomi.” She stepped inside, and before she could even think, she whispered, “I need you.” Adrian’s gaze darkened, his jaw tightening. “Are you running again?” She shook her head. “No. Not this time.” His fingers brushed against her cheek, his touch light but devastating. “Then tell me. What do you want?” She swallowed hard. “You.” Adrian’s breath hitched. “Then stop fighting it.” She didn’t. Because for the first time in a long time, Naomi stopped running. She let herself fall. And Adrian caught her. But the past wasn’t done with her yet. Jordan wasn’t done with her yet. And soon, she would have to face the consequences of her choice. Because some love stories don’t end without a war.
