A wave of anger washed over him, and he grabbed his phone, his fingers trembling with rage. He tried calling Lilian, desperate to confront her to make her understand the pain she'd inflicted on him. But the call wouldn't go through, so she blocked him.
Steffen's anger turned to despair and he slumped to the couch, his back against his couch. He felt like his world was crumbling around him, the pieces of his heart shattered into a million fragments.
The silence in the room was oppressive and he felt like he was drowning in his own sorrow.
With no one to turn to, Steffan felt utterly alone. He couldn't bear the thought of facing his family, of pretending that everything was okay when it wasn't.
The darkness closed in around him, and he let out a despairing cry, the sound echoing off the walls of the empty hollow heart.
As steffan succumbed to the darkness of the expression, drowning in his sorrows in a numbing haze of alcohol, Franklin was indulging in a different kind of escapism, he was entertaining a woman, their bodies intertwined in a frenzied dance of passion.
As they finished, Franklin handed her a wad of cash and she silently gathered her belongings, her eyes cast downward.
She slipped, gathering her belongings, her eyes casting downward. She slipped out of the room, her high heels clicking on the marble floor as she made her way downstairs.
Mrs Jones, the family chef happened to be in the foyer, her eyes widening in dismay as she caught sight of the young woman.
She felt a pang of shame and disappointment, her mind racing with questions. Why would a girl so young, barely in her teenage years, be involved in such activities? Didn't she have parents or guardians to guide her?
Mrs Jones' expression turned from disappointment to concern as she made her way to steffans room. She knocked gently on the door, calling out steffan, dinner is ready.
When there was no response, she knocked again, this time a bit louder. Finally, steffans voice came from the other side of the door, sounding weak and detached.”I'm not hungry”.
Mrs Jones brow furrowed with worry, she knew steffan well enough to recognize that something was amiss. He was always a cheerful and respectful young man, eager to lend a helping hand. But now , his words were laced with a despair that broke her heart.
As she stood, her mind wandered to the contrast between Stefan and his older brother Franklin. While Steffan was kind and considerate, Franklin was arrogant and dismissive, often treating her with disdain when his father was away.
Mrs Jones had always felt a deep affection of a mother to Steffan, who treated her with the respect and kindness she deserved.
Mrs Jones made her way to Mr Santos room, knocked softly on the door.”Dinner is ready sir, she announced.
Next, she headed to Franklin's to repeat the same message. Franklin grunted a response, already making his way to the dining room.
At the dinner table, Mr Santos and Franklin were seated waiting for Steffan to join them. Mr Santos eye scanned the empty chair beside Franklin, his brow furrowed with concern.
Where's steffan? He asked Franklin, his tone tinged with a hint of worry
Franklin shrugged his expression indifferently. “I don't know, and to be honest, I don't really care, he replied, his voice dripping with a lack of concern
Mr Santos eyes narrowed hidy gaze lingering on Franklin's nonchalant demeanor. He sensed a tension in the air, suddenly Mrs Jones arrived with the first meal momentarily his attention.
She served their meal, Mr Santos instructed steffan to call his brother.
Franklin obeyed his father's wishes and headed to Steffan's room from outside the door. He called out, Dad wants you downstairs for dinner.
Steffan, upon hearing his father's summons, hastily washed his face, checked himself in the mirror, and hurried to the door to join them at the dining table.
“Son,What's wrong? Mr Santos, noticing Steffan's tardiness. Why didn't you come down earlier? Steffan hesitated before responding, please don't worry about me dad. Something personal came up, and I just didn't feel like eating.
Just then, Franklin shot Steffan a sharp glance, sensing his father's growing concern. Mr Santos' expression revealed his worry, but before he could press Steffan's father, Franklin abruptly intervened. Dad, Steffan said it's personal , so let's just drop it.
Mr Santos' expression turned disappointed as he gazed at Franklin, but he composed himself and turned to steffan. Son bless the meal?
After the blessing they eat. Once they finished, Mr Santos cleared his throat to speak. I have something important to share with you both; he started.
“The doctor delivered devastating news. My heart is enlarging abnormally due to stress and high blood pressure… and my Time is running out. He paused, collecting his thoughts.
Now is the time for me to see how resourceful my two sons are. I must decide who will inherit my firm, and I'll be making that decision through my will.”
They boys felt like they'd been hit with a bombshell, their minds reeling as they say in stunned silence.
The weight of their fathers words hung in the air , leaving them lost fur worlds. Mr Santos continued, his voice calm and measured.
I've hired a maid to help manage the household and care for me during this time. She'll be starting tomorrow, and I expect you to both treat her with professionalism.
The boys listened intently to their fathers words, their faces somber. When he finished speaking, Mr Santos dismissed them, saying, you may both retire to your rooms now.
The boys nodded and quietly exited the dining room. As soon as they left Mrs Jones, the chef entered the room to clear the table.
Steffan walked into the kitchen, where Mrs Jones was busy clearing up. 'Thank you for dinner, Mrs Jones, 'he said , grabbing a bottle of water from the freezer. As he turned concerned.
Steffan, wait, she said gently. I knocked on your door earlier, and you didn't answer. Is everything okay?
You seemed a bit off during dinner. Steffan hesitated, unsure of how to respond. I'm fine , Mrs Jones. Nothings wrong; he assured her trying to sound convincing.
Though Mrs Jones looked uncertain, Steffan bid her goodnight and headed to his room, leaving her to wonder if he was truly alright.
The next morning, Steffan and Franklin made their way downstairs to greet their father.
But as they entered the room, they were taken aback by a stunning surprise. Beside their father stood a beautiful, charming and slender lady with a warm smile, Mr Santos beamed with pleasure as he introduced her.
This is Laura, our new maid. She'll be taking care of me from now on. “Steffan and Franklin exchanged amazed glances, their minds racing with the same unspoken question; Why on Earth would their father hire such a beautiful woman as a house maid?
Laura greeted Steffan and Franklin with her radiant smile, her eyes sparkling with warmth. It's lovely to meet you both, she said, her voice as pleasant as her appearance.
