From the dazed, vacant expression on Jamie’s face when he walked onto David’s patio the following evening, Carson rethought his impulse to upbraid him. As he relayed the highlights of the encounter with Owen, Carson held his tongue. Jamie was hurting and he refused to say anything that might make it worse – if it killed him.
“Do you want to stay here tonight?” he asked when Jamie was finally done.
“Thanks, no. I’m okay.”
Carson could tell when Jamie was deflecting. He was far from okay and they both knew it. “What are you going to do?” he asked softly.
“I have no idea. Owen and I can’t possibly have a future together.”
“Probably not. But then that’s what I thought about
