Chapter Ten

Cassy It was my first day as an intern. Excitement rubbed with anger filled my being as I prepared for my first big day. I didn't let anything distort my thoughts, not even thoughts about Drake. I stood there in front of the mirror admiring myself. I smiled for a while before I walked out of the room. "Good morning, Cassy." Drake greeted, and I nodded in response to his greetings. Last night was a disaster and I just didn't want to think about it but being in his presence, makes all the memories flood my mind. "It's your big day. Your first day as an intern." Why was he trying to hold a conversation with me? His job was to protect me and he was already doing that. There was no reason to hold any conversation with me. I was silent for a while, trying to focus on what was ahead of me. How I was going to answer the questions that would be thrown at me. "I guess you are too excited and anxious at the same time. Trust me, that was the exact feeling I got when I applied for my first job. It's practically the same thing." I finally tilted my head to look at him after avoiding his gaze for the last fifteen minutes. "Except for the fact that I didn't apply for this one, my father got it for me." He raised one of his eyebrows and I looked away from him. His eyes were fixed on me as the silence continued. "Your father is trying to make you happy by easily giving you a normal life. I don't know if you understand what I am trying to say...." I didn't let him finish what he was saying before I cut him short. "Yeah, I understand that. Now, if you will remain quiet and focus on the road, I would like to focus on my day ahead and try to make it the best. It's my big day, I don't want to mess up when I am being interviewed." I noticed the slight chuckle at what I said. I heaved a sigh as I continued to scroll through my tab. "You really think that you are going to be questioned? You think you are going to go through the process of a normal intern? Do you know who your father is..." At this point, I was frustrated. Why wouldn't he just stop talking and drive? "I am an intern and I have to be treated as one. Please, I really need to focus. You should do your job while I do mine." He didn't wait for me to finish what I was saying before he continued talking. "Look, I am just trying to be on your good side. I mean, how else are we supposed to function correctly if we are not on good terms?" He asked and I forced a smile as I tilted my head to look at him. More of a frustrated smile and he exhaled rapidly. "Why can't you just stay quiet and drive? We are talking, aren't we? The fact that you chose to be professional should not make us close friends. You don't need to try to make me smile or laugh. Your job is to protect me and nothing else. So I suggest you keep to your part of the job. I think it's better we keep it that way. Only talk to me when I ask you questions and when it's very important, otherwise, I would love you to keep your opinions to yourself." I finally ended my speech and all he did was nod his head slowly as if he were trying to come to terms with what I had just said. The rest of the trip was silent as I wished. He drove into the parking lot and I hopped out of the car. I was excited for what was ahead of me but then the excitement faded slowly as I recalled his words on our way here. Was I going to be treated specially because of my father's status or was I going to be treated like a regular intern? I really hoped it was the latter and not the former. I walked slowly through the automated door into the building. Drake walked behind me but I didn't mind. I assumed his absence and walked straight to the reception. I smiled at the lady and she immediately stood up from her chair and bowed slightly to greet me with a grin on her face. "You must be the new...." Drake interrupted her and she was forced to stop talking. "Executive member." He said quickly and the lady nodded. I shook my head, unsatisfied with how he introduced me. That was not what I was here to be. "Intern. I am the new intern." I said rapidly, trying to maintain a normal look. I avoided his gaze even though I knew he was trying to get me to look at him. "I will take you to the Director, right away ma'am." She said as she hurriedly left her space. She walked steadily while constantly tilting her head to look at me with a smile on her face. They must have been told about me. About my father and perhaps that was why she was being like this. "What did I tell you about meddling in my affairs?" I asked in a low tone, my voice was barely above a whisper. "Nothing! You didn't say anything about that." I knew he was trying to get words out of me. "Do your job and stay out of my business," I said sternly in a low tone. I was certain that the look on my face matched the stern voice too. "You are welcome to our company. I hope you enjoy your stay here." She said in a low tone as we came to a halt in front of a door. The tag on the door read Director. She walked away from me. Drake knocked on the door, and I gave him a fierce look. "Welcome!" I heard a thick voice from inside the office.
