Was she aware of the mental torture that she was exerting on me? I doubt if she was aware of what she was doing. I stood there, unattended, ignored like I didn't exist. Why was she the daughter of our boss? Now that I have to keep my feelings to myself to protect my life and hers, I have to live with the guilt and pain that comes with it.
"You have gone silent again. You don't have to...." She didn't let me finish what I was saying before she interrupted me.
"What differences does it make? Talking to you and keeping quiet. I don't feel any better talking to you. So it's better to stay on my own." I knew she was edging closer to chasing me out of her office. I exhaled heavily, but before I could say anything, a rapid knock came on the door, and I quickly tilted my head, trying to get to the door, but before I could get there, the doorknob turned and the door opened.
A young man peeked through with a smile on his face which quickly faded as his gaze met mine. He opened widely and he appeared fully. He walked slowly inside the office, clearing his throat as he arranged his tie.
"Sorry, I didn't know that you had company." He said, obviously not talking to me. I gave her a look to see the expression on her face. She smiled and that spiked me.
"Oh, don't worry about him. And you are?" She asked in a calm voice. I could not bear to see her talk to him in that manner. I made a stern face as I looked at him. He looked intimidated as he walked past me, closer to her desk. I tried to walk rapidly but she gave me a look and I only understood what she was trying to mean.
"Uhm! My name is Hayes...." She made a puzzled face as he said that. I could only imagine what was going on through her mind. Was it love at first sight? I was boiling with anger where I was standing but I had a job to do. There was no way I would show her any emotion at all. I took a deep breath to calm my nerves.
"Let me guess. You are Director Kim's son." I heard him let out a subtle gasp. Wait! She was really trying to form that bond with him? Why? Why was she being so easygoing with him and she was trying to make it a living hell for me?
"I don't see that resemblance each time I look into the mirror. But somehow, people always know that I am his son." He replied, laughing slightly. I cleared my throat slightly as I wanted her attention plus to let her know that I wasn't really okay with the fact that she was being all friendly with her.
"I knew it. The only difference between the two of you is just the age. I am sure that when your father was at this age, he looked exactly like you." She said slowly like she was counting her words as they came out of her mouth. He laughed, taking a deep breath.
"I know your name, already. I would not lie about that but it's only formal that I ask you what your name is." At this point, if he didn't stop what he was doing, I could ask him to leave angrily. My gaze was fixed on her but she was doing a great job of avoiding it.
"Oh, pardon my manners. I am Cassandra. But people call me..." He didn't let her finish before he chipped in and she was forced to listen.
"Cassy for short." She made a puzzled face before she laughed and he did as well. I could not hold it anymore. I cleared my throat to grab their attention and that was when she turned to look at me.
"You didn't have breakfast before leaving the house. You need to eat. You must be hungry." I really should have kept quiet and not raised that up. He made a scrunching face as he tilted his head back to look at her.
"Why didn't you eat breakfast before coming to work. Oh, I get it, you were overwhelmed and the need to eat wasn't there. I understand. It happened to me on my first day at work too." She laughed at the way he talked and that got me infuriated. I lowered my head, inhaling deeply to calm my racing heart, and then her voice made me raise my head.
"That makes us even.". She paused. I wanted to leave the scene but I didn't want them to stay together as well. This was torture but it was what I signed up for. This was better than being killed.
"I don't even feel like eating." She added and there was a moment of silence.
"It's almost time for lunch. Perhaps you might be hungry before lunchtime. We could grab lunch together. What do you think?" I didn't know when I stepped in and gave him a response ahead of Cassy.
"She won't be free because she will be having lunch with me." She gave me a straight stare for a while and for some reason, she didn't counter that. She only nodded her head and the son of a b***h exhaled slowly and heavily.
"Maybe some other time. It was nice chatting with you, Cassy. I just wanted to welcome you informally to our company. We are all happy to have you here. You will be invited to the boardroom for a formal introduction and a welcome party if need be." He said slowly and she chuckled slightly.
"Thank you very much, Hayes! I really feel welcomed here." She said and he turned around. He let out a smile of satisfaction as he walked towards the door. I watched him walk away in anger, unable to express my anger. I was glad to have talked to him in that manner that I did.
"What was the meaning of that?" She asked in a low tone and I made a puzzled face as I looked her in the eyes.
