Chapter Fourteen

Hayes I made my way straight to my father's office, staggering like I was high on something. What did I just witness? I knew a bodyguard was going to come with her but I didn't expect him to be around her. Be overprotective of her like this. I hurried down the hallway until I was in front of his office. "What's wrong with you? Have you seen Cassandra? She went to her office a while ago...." I didn't let him finish what he wanted to say before I chipped in and he was forced to listen to me. "It was awful. Really awful. I didn't know she was coming here with a bodyguard who was a father figure. You needed to see the way he was looking at me. As if he knew I had something in mind to do. He was really angry when I was trying to talk to her." He watched some keenly as every word escaped my lips. "I don't understand. Did you get to meet her?" He asked in a low tone, like he wasn't interested in what I was telling him. I nodded, inhaling deeply to catch my breath. "I met her. I talked to her. She was accommodating, friendly, and easy to talk to. The only problem was her bodyguard, who doubled as her father. He was all over the place, angry that I was talking to her. I only tried to maintain the composite inside her office so as not to look like a coward. I was sure that he was ready to make me look like a child." "That's a good way to start. At least you know that she is friendly and easy to talk to. Did you ask her to have lunch with you?" Again, he skipped the part where I mentioned her bodyguard. I could not help but think that he was doing so intentionally. I stayed quiet for a while to see his reaction, but he kept looking me straight in the eyes, and I was forced to lean forward to talk. "Why are you avoiding talks about the bodyguard? I just told you how he was a pain in the ass but you don't just want to talk about him." "I don't have any business with the bodyguard. He is just a distraction and if he distracts you, you might not be able to achieve our plan. You need to focus on her and not him." He paused and just when I wanted to talk, he beat me to it and talked first. "Having lunch together is a good way to start. She seemed slightly upset about her dad. You might use that as a basis for your next discussion during lunch. Make sure you don't screw anything up. Focus on her and not him." I watched his lips move to form every word that came out of his mouth. I only shook my head and he froze, waiting for me to talk. "I am not having lunch with her," I stated plainly. "She declined? Why would she decline? I thought you said she was very friendly and easy to talk to...." I didn't let him finish what he wanted to say before I cut him out. "She was not the one who declined. Her bodyguard did. He made it so clear that he wanted to have lunch with her and she didn't even say anything to counter him. Perhaps she is scared of him as well." I added in a low tone but he chuckled slightly, looking away from me. Many thoughts rushed through my mind as I sat there in front of him. How do I go about him? I didn't include him in my plans because I wasn't expecting him to assume the role of a father. "This is not supposed to wear you out. You will find a way around him. The plan remains the focus." He raised his wrist to see the time and he looked back at me before he continued from where he stopped. "It's almost time for a welcome greeting. Let's make it to the boardroom." He said, grunting lightly as he stood up from his chair. I did the same and we walked towards the door. Just as I was about to open the door, a knock sounded and I went ahead to open the door. It was his secretary. "Hello, Director Kim. Hello sir." She greeted us both with a slight bow and I responded by waving. "I was just about to come and inform you that it's time for your board meeting, but Sir Hayes had already done that." I chuckled, tilting my head to look at her and my father. "Actually it was the other way around. I reminded him that it was time. You are welcome, both of you." He said jokingly as we walked down the hallway. We were already on the floor of the boardroom, and just as I was about to enter, I noticed the presence of someone, and I tilted my head to look at her. Fear gripped me the moment I set my eyes on him. He walked behind her looking fierce as I met him the first time. "Focus on her and not him." My father's voice sounded in my mind and I forced a smile at her. "I almost wanted to come and get you from your office, and then I remembered you have a secretary to do that for you, and thankfully, you didn't get lost," I said in a low tone as I waited to fit her to catch up with me. "I see you are doing a great job, making sure that she is okay." I turned towards him to talk but he didn't look like he was interested in having a conversation with me. "Well, I wasn't expecting you to come back. Thank you for the nice thoughts though." She talked gently and I could only smile. I opened the door and she walked in. He wanted to walk in as well and then I stood in front of him. "This is a board meeting. You have to stay outside." I didn't know how I managed to say that, but after he looked at Cassy, he walked away slowly, and I heaved a heavy sigh of relief.
