Chapter Fifteen

1039 Words
Drake The day was finally over. I escorted her to the driveway, where the car was parked. The walk was silent except for the thudding sound of our shoes as they collided with the ground. Suddenly, I heard the rapid footsteps approaching behind me. I turned to see who it was and my gaze fell on him. Was he here to get on my nerves again? I asked myself and before I could turn to face Cassy, she had already noticed his presence and was wearing a smile on her face. "Should I say thank you or...." She started the conversation and I just stood there, bitter and angry. How could she not see what was going on? "You can say anything, as long as you don't discuss not having lunch with me today." They both laughed and she nodded, looking at me briefly like she wanted to draw the answer from my forehead. "I don't want to talk about it either. Overall, I must admit, I anticipated my first day at work to be a lot lonelier but you made it less. It didn't feel like it was my first....." She could not finish what she wanted to say before he interrupted her and she was forced to listen to him. "You can thank me tomorrow. Over lunch. I hope you don't mind." She quickly shook her head with a smile. Perhaps she was thinking that I would jump into the conversation and prevent her from having lunch with him, which was why she was quick to give him a response. "Lunch would be nice tomorrow. I have to hurry now. I need to rest and put things together." He smiled and gave a nod, turning around to leave. I inhaled deeply, and just when I wanted to talk, his voice started to echo again, and this time, I clenched my hand into a fist out of frustration. Can't he go away? "What do you want?" I asked in a low but fierce tone. If he were smart enough, he would have gotten the hint that I didn't want him around anymore, but he chose to be daft instead. Cassy tapped me on the side of my upper arm like she was trying to calm me down. I hesitated for a while, looking him deep in the eyes as I tried to send a strong warning through my stare. "Nothing much. I had wanted to get your phone number, perhaps we could chat later." I shook my head, ready to tell him that he didn't need to chat with her, but she started to talk in his favour and I had to interrupt. "I am sorry but I don't think you should have her contact. You can always meet here in the office and have conversations about work." I tried to talk in a low tone but anger had other plans. I sounded furious and that got both of them staring at me like I was a wild animal that had cut loose. There was a moment of quiet before she cleared her throat slightly to talk. "I am sorry for that, Hayes! I am sure you don't mind at all." He shook his head slightly, laughing subtly as he shoved his hands into his pockets. "I totally understand. He is just doing his job and there is totally no harm in that. I will see you tomorrow then. Good night." He turned to walk away and I felt relieved. As he walked back into the building, she stood there, her eyes darting between me and him as he walked away slowly. "Wait!" She yelled and as if he had been waiting for her to call on him, he halted immediately, turning around to look at her. "There are some things that I need to understand before I come to work tomorrow and since I can't work overtime in the office, you will have to put me through it virtually." For a moment, the world stopped moving and time ceased. I gave her a look of dissatisfaction but she ignored me and walked closer to him It didn't take them long to exchange contacts before finally bidding each other goodbye. "You want to explain the meaning of what you did, the whole of today?" Her voice suddenly jolted me out of my deep thoughts. I didn't utter a single word to her at all and I concentrated on the road. I had no idea why I was angry about the whole thing. Perhaps it was because I badly wanted to express my feelings for her but couldn't, because of my job restraints. "I believed I asked a very important question. And you are not deaf, nor are you dumb to process and relay a valid answer to me." I didn't waste any time before I gave her a response. "You better watch your tongue, young lady. I don't have to accept those sucky words from you because I work with you. And besides I was only doing my job." I said slowly as if I was counting my words as they escaped my lips. "Oh yes! I can talk to you in any way I want. You had no right to do any of those things that you did today. First, you lied to me that it was an intern, and then you tried to invade my space, and then you tried to come between me and a worker. Are you even aware of what you did? Because you aren't even accepting that you are at fault in any way. And for the umpteenth time, you don't work with me, you work for me. The earlier you understand that the better for you." She paused to take a deep breath before she continued. "What perception do you want them to have about me?" I chuckled, tilting my head slightly to look at her. She was angry and I knew better not to worsen it. In the same vein, I didn't want to make her feel right about what she was saying. I was jealous that she formed a bond with him, yes but that was the last thing she was ever going to hear me say to her.
