Playing the Victim

"Qing'er, ignore them," Sima Chun said, not wanting his grandma and mommy to know about her just yet. It’s not the right time yet, he thought. Those two old women are not to be trifled with. And Qing’er’s mom was still in the hospital. If she finds out, who knows what kind of mess would be created. After arriving in Canada, she hadn't mentioned wanting to meet the Old Madam or the Madam. This is a little strange, he thought. Sima Chun felt there might be some conflict between Qing’er's mother and his grandma and mommy. That’s why when he first asked Qing'er’s mother to come to Canada, she had immediately refused. It's best not to let Qing'er meet them just yet. He was still unsure if the young girl whom he had kept in his heart for thirteen years had fallen in love with him too, he truly had no idea. "Big brother, is this how you treat guests? No wonder you say that you never have visitors," Sima Qing said, her displeasure clear on her face. She liked having people at home, but he never did. She sat in the chair, pouting. Ding dong… Ding dong... Ding dong… Ding dong… The doorbell rang increasingly urgently. Gao Suqing knew Sima Chun was home. She had asked Secretary Lin on the 98th floor, and Lin Yue, expressionless, had told her that the President was on the 99th floor. She smiled triumphantly, thinking, Secretary Lin, you’re finally acting a bit more sensible. Before, when I would ask where the President was, you would simply say he wasn't in headquarters and that you didn’t know where he was. And if I asked any more you would just say that he had gone abroad. She didn't seem to realize that she might get retribution for using such sneaky tactics. Sima Chun decided he should let them in. He needed to talk to both of them, so they wouldn’t do something like what happened yesterday ever again. He looked at Sima Qing, who was still rolling her eyes at him: "Qing'er, you go to the study and write a list of the things you want to buy later. When I'm talking to the guests, you shouldn’t come out, okay? Please stay in the study.” “Why can’t I come out? Can’t I meet the guests of our home?” She said, clearly not accepting his decision. "Little princess, please be good, okay? The people who will be coming in a bit are big brother’s grandma and mommy. When adults are talking, kids shouldn’t interrupt, okay?” He truly didn’t want his little princess to be wronged in any way. He was too clear about the personalities of the two old women outside the door. “Then I want to say hi to them first before going to the study. My mom always taught me to do that.” She was still insisting. Sima Chun thought, How can such a little girl be so stubborn? But looking at her face, he couldn’t bring himself to get angry. He could only patiently explain: "Big brother will definitely let you formally meet them soon. Today, just do it for me, okay?” She didn’t understand what a formal meeting was, but looking into his helpless eyes, Sima Qing nodded. “Chun’er, why did you take so long to open the door?” Gao Suqing and the Old Madam said, entering with faces filled with displeasure. They showed no sign of remorse for what they had done yesterday. "Oh, what do you want from me?" Sima Chun said, his tone just as sharp. He knew exactly why they were there. "Chun’er, what do you intend to do about this? Give me an answer today," the Old Madam said, her face stern. Sima Qing peeked through the crack of the door, just managing to see the Old Madam's serious face. “Grandma, Mommy, I’ll decide on my own affairs. I won't get married next month. It’s impossible," he said, his words firm and without any room for change. "But we want you to get married next month. Grandson, you have the responsibility of carrying on the Sima family line, and you can’t avoid that responsibility. You're thirty years old, and you've had so many girlfriends, surely there's someone you want to marry? That's impossible, isn’t it? Grandma only wants you to give birth to a child for the Sima family, so that I can rest in peace and go see your grandfather. Grandma’s request is not too much, right?" Seeing that her grandson's tone was so firm, she had to soften her stance. After all, he was her only grandson, and she had raised him herself. "Your request isn’t too much, but what you and mommy did is too much. Yesterday you put an aphrodisiac in my tea. Luckily, I found out in time. Do you realize, I had to fly a helicopter back here, did you two not think about what might have happened to me? You want to have a grandchild, that's fine, but right now I don’t want to get married or have children. I beg that you two do not do anything childish like you did yesterday ever again." His voice still had no hint of softness, it was, instead, more assertive. Gao Suqing, seeing that the grandmother and grandson were about to have a falling out, rushed to smooth things over: “Chun’er, your grandma’s meaning was just that she wants you to have a child for the Sima family. We won't force you to get married, and we can't force you anyway, we are just pleading with you. Without a grandchild, your grandma and I won’t have any peace of mind at home. Please think about this for us, Mommy is begging you." As she spoke, she was almost crying. "Grandson, our family has everything except a grandson. Grandma really wants to hold a grandson,” the Old Madam said, tears streaming down her face. “Grandma, Mommy, I will carry on the Sima family line, I will have a grandson, but not now, maybe in two or three years time," he said, unsure of himself. “What? Two or three years? Chun’er, will grandma still be alive in three years time? Heavens, what am I going to do with Chun’er? I really can’t think of anything, why is my fate so bitter…” The Old Madam began to put on a full-blown act, seeing that the tough approach wasn’t working. “Chun’er, you’re not being certain at all! In two or three years you’ll just tell us to wait for another two or three years. What exactly are you thinking? Tell Mommy honestly, okay? I’m begging you,” Gao Suqing said, her tone on the verge of begging. Sima Chun was stunned. Yes, he didn’t even know when he would get married or have kids. The girl he loved and wanted to marry was only sixteen, she still needed to go to high school and college, and will she even want to marry me when she grows up? He had no idea, truly. But he would wait for her, wait for her to grow up, and wait for her to love him. "Chun’er, settle down, my child, you're already thirty years old, you're not a child anymore. You've been messing around with women for over ten years, and neither grandma nor I have ever blamed you. Grandma’s health isn’t good, and if she really passes away one day, you won't have fulfilled her final wish. Won't you feel remorseful then? I'm not trying to scare you, but if you still don’t find a woman to marry and have a child now, your grandma will be so distressed that she won't be able to live for more than a few months. Since you are so unfilial, we truly don’t know what to do," Gao Suqing said truthfully. The Old Madam was still crying non-stop. Sima Chun knew that if he didn’t give them a satisfying answer today, the two of them wouldn’t leave.
