So… The beast was slayed, everyone’s still alive, and the sea was calm again. The sun went down and the moon came up. But we were still too excited to sleep. Except the Old Ones. They were snoring already in the bow of the boat, under the tarpaulin. I guess they needed more sleep, because they were old.
The night was beautiful. I was lying on the bottom of the boat, side by side with Bobbie and Noona, watching the pitch black sky full of stars.
”So many stars”, I started, ”Do you know any of them by name?” The question was meant to Noona, but Bobbie had to comment first.
”Yeah, sure. See that shiny, twinkling one over there?”
”Yep, what’s it called?”
”It’s called Yurassic.”
”Yurassic?”
”Yeah, like U R SICK. Mwahahaha!”
Damn that Bobbie! Can never have a decent, serious conversation. But at least they had a good laugh. Maybe we all needed that, after a traumatic day.
”Actually that shiny one is part of Orion.” Noona started to educate us. Not only is she beautiful, she also knows things.
”The ancient Greeks called that a constellation of a hunter. If you look closely, you might see the form an ox in there. Let’s hope it brings us luck.”
”Yes, I can see it”, said Bobbie.
”Oh yeah, I can see it too”, I lied. I didn’t see an ox or anything else, just a pile of stars.
Soon I was the last one awake. As the boat slowly swung in the middle of the darkness I couldn’t help but keep thinking about our existence. Was there a meaning in all of this?
There’s several explanations why the whole world was flooded with water. Some say it was the wrath of God, a second Deluge, an Armageddon. Others have a more scientific approach and blame the global warming. There’s even an argument about the moon, how it was hit by an asteroid and shifted from its usual orbit, thus bringing the water up with its gravity.
I only knew that we were in a lot of trouble. Screwed.
But I was thinking how lucky I was to be a part of this group. True, we had our arguments, and someone (= Bobbie) was always taking the piss out of me. But we stuck together, and everyone had their own important skill, the contribution for the group. Noona was a soldier, Bobbie was a sailor, Grog could crush anything, Fisherman could fish, Warmaster Ishi teached us how to use the swords, Missie A was a singer, etc… Everyone had a special skill.
My specialty? I’ll tell you later. Because now it was the break of dawn and there was an island in the horizon!
