Chapter 1 : Moving Day

Lacuna slowly opened her eyes, then squeezed them shut again against the bright sunlight streaming through her window. "Ugh," she groaned. "What day is it?" A moment later, it clicked. "Yesterday was March 6th… which means…" Her eyes flew open. "It's my birthday! My twenty-first!" She leaped out of bed, hurried to the bathroom, and took care of her morning routine. Satisfied with her appearance, she skipped downstairs. As she reached the bottom of the stairs, her mom and dad launched into a joyous rendition of "Happy Birthday." Her dad, beaming, approached with a strawberry cake, its candles flickering merrily. "Happy Birthday, Dear Lala," he sang, his voice warm and affectionate. "Happy birthday to you." Lacuna met his gaze, a smile spreading across her face. "Make a wish and blow out the candles, sweetie," he prompted. Closing her eyes, she silently wished for a long, happy, and healthy life for herself, her mom, and her dad. Then, with a deep breath, she blew out the candles. Cheers erupted from her parents as they began the celebratory feast, a day filled with laughter, love, and the joy of turning twenty-one. The last bite of strawberry cake was bittersweet. Lacuna savored the sweetness, a familiar comfort against the nervous flutter in her stomach. It was her twenty-first birthday, a milestone marking not only a new year but also a new chapter. Today, she moved. Today, she started anew on 13th Street. The celebratory buzz of the day was fading, replaced by a quiet anticipation tinged with melancholy. Her parents, their faces a mixture of pride and sadness, were clearing the table, their usual boisterous energy subdued. The air was thick with unspoken goodbyes, the weight of impending separation hanging heavy between them. This wasn't just a birthday; it was a farewell. Lacuna found herself in the backseat of her parents' car, her boxes piled high in the trunk. The familiar route felt strange, unfamiliar now that it was leading her not to classes, but to a new life. The landscape unfolded outside the window—a perfect balance of nature and structure. Rolling hills and lush green spaces met charming, well-maintained buildings, creating a scene that was both peaceful and vibrant. This wasn't the overwhelming sprawl of a big city, nor was it an isolated rural area; it was something in between, something…just right. The knot of anxiety in her chest loosened slightly; this felt different, less overwhelming. As they drove, the sounds of nature—birds chirping, a gentle breeze rustling through leaves—mingled with the distant hum of activity. It wasn't the cacophony of a city, but a harmonious blend of natural sounds and the quiet rhythm of a thriving community. She glanced at her parents, their faces etched with a mixture of worry and hope. They were letting go, releasing her into the unknown. Her father pulled up to the curb in front of her new building. It was smaller than she expected, nestled amongst trees and flowering bushes, a little worn, but charming in its own way. It wasn't isolated, but it felt private, tucked away in a quiet residential area. She could already picture herself sitting on the porch swing, watching the sunset paint the sky, the sounds of nature a gentle lullaby. Before she could fully process her feelings, her father was helping her unload her boxes. Her mother stood nearby, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. They exchanged one last hug, a silent promise of continued love and support. Then, with a final wave and a choked-up "We love you," they drove away, leaving Lacuna standing alone on the sidewalk, facing her new building. This was it. A fresh start. A new beginning. She took a deep breath, pushing open the heavy front door, ready to embrace whatever 13th Street held in store for her. Little did she know that the street held secrets, a history of love and loss, and a destiny she couldn't yet imagine. Her last ride with her parents, and the first step into a future yet unwritten.
