Tina was taking a moment to compose herself again just inside the French doors of the ballroom when her mother walked up, accompanied by Lord Ayres. “Tina, what happened? What’s wrong?” They both looked very concerned.
“Nothing, I…” Tina started.
Warwick strode past them without a glance in her direction. Well, that was fine with her. She had nothing more to say to the man.
“Did something happen between you and the duke?” her father whispered.
Tina took in a deep breath. “He proposed to me.”
“What? When?” Her mother’s eyes went wide.
“Just now. In the garden. He said now that I was a member of society, he felt he could do so. I told him… Well, I told him no.”
